Budgie Bathing

Hello, My names Tahlia, I am new. My Budgies name is Mini, Pippy-Mini.. But we call him Mini. Anyway, I've read that you should bath your budgie atleast weekly, So What is the best way, I have heard of many ways, In the shower with you, a little bird bath. But what is the best? Is there any shampoo ineed to use? Or is it just luke warm water...? I also read, you should never force him into water, He will come if he wants to. Anyone any tips? And Bathing a budgie, what does this do? What happenes if you dont? :P:P:P

just water is perfect you don't need any type of soap

There are several ways you can bathe you bird it depends on what he likes best you can try different things.

1. Showers - and if you do that I suggest buying a shower perch for your bird you don't want him on the floor and step on him or her.

2. Spray them with a spray bottle and mist them

3. A bed of lettuce in a lukewarm water in a bowl

4. Putting them in the sink and run the water lukewarm

I personally do 4 and have to force my Pretty to bath he hates water, he will do #3 but not good enough to get really wet

or and there is the bird baths you can hang on the cages

I am sure others will come with ideas too, work with different ones and see which one he likes.

I've heard that you can pull out the tray at the bottom of the cage and fill it with luke warm water to bath budgies is that right?

Also its heading into winter here and my budgie isnt hand tame to be able to warm him up after in a towel or anything but if i put a bath of lukewarm water in the bottom and then leave him in a room with a heater, will that be okay?

:)

Best time to give a bath or offer one is first thing in the morning therefore they have all day to dry, and make sure the heater is not too close to the cage and there is not a significant drop or rise in tempature that is what makes them sick. :redalbino:

Does it matter if he doesn't get any water on his head/back? Stitch loves splashing around but only his legs/belly ever gets really wet.

:ausb: Unlike my lovebirds and cockatiel, my budgies only partially bathe themselves (don't get it either). So that is why I mist them every other week assuming it is a warm day, don't do it as frequently in the winter). :bluebudgie:

i have a little bird bath that i clip onto the cage door when its open my budgie only sometimes goes in it but my canary soaks herself its quite funny to watch :rip: but sometimes on a warm day i take a water bottel and mist them :(

I don't bathe mine unless they give indications that they want to bathe. So I set out a lukewarm plastic cup for them to bathe in. I stick it in their cage. The way I know they want bathing is when they try putting themselves into the drinking water. I only bathe them when they want to be bathed, after all, they are birds--and don't need to be bathed like WE need to be.

I have given them a bath (a shower rather) today. They surely didn't like it at first, but then took it with stoicism. They look clean and happy now chirping in the cage under the lamp I put up to keep them warm. I plan to give them a bath once in a fortnight. :D

:( Actually, they don't need to bathe that much especially when the weather is cold, it will make their skin dry and itchy. Also remember not to shower them at night, it needs to be really warm during the day so they can dry off before bedtime. :(

Thank you, Phoebe. I think you are quite right in this one. Also I can't say my birds enjoyed the shower much. I'd rather watch other people give their birds a bath first. Besides, it is winter, and although it is rather warm now the Sun is just not there... :hap:
