Posted May 5, 200619 yr Hello, My name is Tahlia, and i just obtained a really cute budgie. About i think maybe last month? ...Yes, about a month ago, i started noticing him scratching arouns his eye, Now, it is really bad, he has no feathers around that eye, it is greyish-white skin, dry and flaky, when he scratchers, it falls off, Flakes off i should say. I am freaking out! I did some research and i think he compares to the type of mite, Mycosis . :hap: I'm hoping its not to bad. But has anyone had or has this problem? could anyone give me some tips? Thanks. :hap:
May 5, 200619 yr Welcome to our forums, I would have to say because none of us are avian vets that I would ring and make an appointment. It sounds like it would be an issue that would need medical treatment and you don't want it to go to long because it would just get worse.
May 5, 200619 yr It sounds to me like whatever this is that the bird has, has gone on long enough for the bird to be in some discomfort. Best course of action is get it diagnosed properly by a bird vet and get it on the road to recovery. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
May 5, 200619 yr I agree with the other posts, a vet trip is needed. Once you get the medication needed, all should be good! Welcome to the forum by the way!
May 5, 200619 yr Thankyou all soo much. Making me feel welcome. Yes today i am going to get this problem sorted. I will let you know on this post how it goes. Thankyou.
May 6, 200619 yr HEllo, okay, I did go to Pet Care, and told her about Mini's (My budgie) problem, she said that if he hasn't gone outside, it isn't mites. So she said it is most likely scaly face, so i have this cream to put on him. i just put it on, and Aww.. He was squirming, and he looks mangy now, but i am sure, it will help, within time. I will Keep you posted. Thanks. Tahlia
May 6, 200619 yr actually scaley face is caused by a mite keep an eye on it sometimes the creams works and sometimes they don't and it always best to have the bird treated by an avian vet. Without seeing the bird a diagnosis is not always cut and dry. So personally I would probably go to the vet for the safe side, but that is just me. Keep us updated.
May 6, 200619 yr i've had to deal with a few nasty cases of scaly face and in my experience when its as advanced as your describing that you need to go into the vet to get a few shots, i can't recall what they were but they did do the trick it took 4 injections and 2 months but i have a happy healthy grateful budgie, if you want i know mineral oil can help sooth the irritation while waiting to get into the vet. i'd leave the cream alone unless the a vet gave it to you, if its from a pet shop chances are its doing more harm than good, just make sure you don't get any oil on the feathers, or wait it out because it is on the eye. hope your little buddy gets better.
May 6, 200619 yr Be very careful not to get the cream in his nostrils ..........you can get an invermectin solution from the vets that is just a spot on treatment in the shoulderblade area on his back. Treat once usually does the trick...one drop. Two weeks roughly to show healing results. Be wary of some pet shop medications and sometimes they cost more than vet preparations.
May 6, 200619 yr Ohhh okay.. Yes, At the moment it is very red. I'm just hoping it is getting better. I'll keep you posted.
May 6, 200619 yr I use Baby oil to keep the mites away. When handling the birds and quick wipe of baby oil on the legs and the cere does the trick. :hap: Edited May 6, 200619 yr by daz
May 8, 200619 yr Yay! okay a little update on Scaly face here. This treatment is really working. I remember when i scratch him on the neck, i felt scabs, i pulled back his feathers and saw what I call a "Mergoonga or Konka" But it was whitish with holes everywhere, quite gross. Anyway, from then i knew something was wrong, I am checking him Daily or should i say Minutely, Checking for anymore scabs. The "Mergoongas/Konkas" okay, I will call them Scabs, but they have gone down, and only little ones remain slowly fading, Now it is just pinkish skin. Thanks to all you guys that answered my first post (This one) because i always check here! I couldn't believe my first post was answered! I thought you would call me a Newbie, and say "Nah, its a newbie don't bother or something! Haha" Thanks again.!
May 8, 200619 yr Very cool. Great when you get results, huh We are a friendly lot here as you will find out. Cheers Kaz
