Posted May 4, 200619 yr Whilst feeding and watering the aviary birds this afternoon, I peeked into the nesting box that Patches has been toiling over(removing all the shavings!) and discovered a beautiful lil egg! I am sooooo egg-cited!!!!! I had hoped that Opal And Olive would start to breed, they are in a breeding box now, but Rusty and Patches have fallen head over heels!
May 4, 200619 yr Author As far as I know it is, this is (at least) her third home and she is an 03hen, I will ask the lady I purchased her from for more info (I would hate to be responsible for overbreeding her :S ) but I am certain that she was in a seperate enclosure to the males. Its the very first time ANY of my budgies have ever laid eggs ( I have always had either all males or all females!) hence my egg-citement! It has sparked the interest of my son, which is terrific... he wanted to know all about incubation times clutch sizes and the size of the babies so I have shown him lots of photos from here, and lots of articles too!
May 4, 200619 yr I know how excited you must be, as I have just started breeding my birds as well and when you see that first little white egg - well, its better than winning lotto!! I originally bought a few pairs of budgies to breed as a hobby for my son, but when they didnt breed straight away, he lost interest. I now have babies at all different ages and I absolutely love it! It is lots of fun seeing what colour the chicks turn out to be - hope you enjoy it as much as I do!! Good luck!
May 4, 200619 yr Author It would be lovely if we did have babies Anna, I already have homes for my first five or so chicks - and that is just with family members! At the moment demand far outweighs my supply!
May 5, 200619 yr Ohhhh you are sooooooo lucky, I cant wait till mine start breeding, my biggest problem is I wont want to sell the baby's, I can see I'm going to end up with "hundreds" of budgies... How terrible would that be..hehe
May 5, 200619 yr Author Thats exactly why any prospective babies will be going to family members Bluebird!!! I can keep a close eye on them that way! I aim to keep some myself though. I actually caught them (Patches is dominant pied and Rusty is sky-blue spangle) mating today! I can hardly wait to see what any babies look like!!! I am worried though that it will be very cold when the eggs are due to hatch. Should I be thinking about removing them from the aviary and putting them inside at some stage??????? Or just leave them be? Edited May 5, 200619 yr by Patches

Or just leave them be? Patches is isn't that cold here in Brisbane Queensland. I got 9deg on wednesday but thats fine. Where abouts are you?
May 5, 200619 yr Author Daz I am on the downs, it gets a bit cooler than that over night here, and our daily temps in 3 weeks time will most probably be a maximum of 9deg! I remember going on holidays to the GC/Brisbane in June one year, and taking the kids swimming at the beach at 7am (Laughing out loud) only to come home a few hours later to sub zero temps! Sadly the first egg has been tossed from the box, but she has laid a second.
May 5, 200619 yr yeah, good luck with the second one. I hope this one is a good egg. :hap: It is so very eggciting indeed!!
May 6, 200619 yr Congrats on the eggs, sorry the first one was tossed out, however, once they start they will usally keep going and in a few weeks hopefully you will have a nest full of litte pink aliens just like me! Good hatching!
May 11, 200619 yr Author Well, Patches laid egg number five today! She started sitting on them on Monday the 15th after she lay the third egg on Sunday(so she had two under her as she tossed the first) so would the first be due to hatch around the 26th or 18 days from when it was laid? So far the nights have been cool but not too cold so I am happy for her to stay in the aviary for at least a little while longer, although I can see myself bringing her inside before too long!
