Dying Birds

Hi all

I wrote about my son's budgies dying. I now have the results of the autopsy. They all died from coxidiosis( ?). I guess this is bad!. Can any one please enlighten me what caused this disease and if there is any hope left for the remaining budgies.

Mum :)

found this

Is the vet treating the rest of the birds? Sounds like it is quite easy to treat, but you will need to do a thourugh scrub of the cage, perches, dishes, toys etc. I would do that now, and then again just before the end of the treatment.

good to hear why now you can get it treated, keep us updated.

Coccidiosis

Symptoms: intestinal inflammation, bloody feces, weight loss

Description: Various species of coccidiae occur in birds. These protozoan infect the small intestine of the bird. Coccidiosis seldom produces sudden death but death may occur following heavy infestation for several months.

Treatment: Amprolium at 3 ml/l water for 2 weeks or sulfaquinoxaline 0.05% at 6 g/l water for 7 days. The latter dosage must be increased by 50% for small birds, and a second treatment may be required.

I use Coccivet from Vetafarm I do this on a 3 monthly basis.

So did the vet think the quails were the source? Or is this an airborne thing?

I think this is a parasite predominately found in chickens, and quail are closely related. I would think the quail introduced it into the aviary

Lin bring up that point are you treating the quails too? Right they should be treated. Daz you do this as a preventive measure right by giving them the doses every 3 months?

I had an autopsy on the quail too. Apparently he died from stress. However I pretty much expected them to say that seeing I bought the quail from them. They don't want to take responsibility. They said the birds got this disease from wild birds. However I can't see how as I have had budgies for 3 years and they have never been sick and they have always been in contact with wild birds that land on top of the aviary. I am starting to treat the remaining 2 budgies and the remaining 4 finches with antibiotics. Hopefully this will help them though this outbreak. I already scrubbed the whole aviary, replaced the water pots and foods pots and put in new perches before the other 5 died. I was hoping this would have stopped the spread but it seems like they already had it. Oh well I guess the only good thing to come out of this is we get to enjoy some new birds. This has definatelh taught my son about life and death. :D

I hope all goes well for your birds now. It is so hard having your children have to deal with this kind of thing. Please keep us informed how it goes

Interesting that you should mention Pet City Mt Gravatt for supplying the budgies. That is where I bought my quail from that died. They said my quail died from stress however before I introduced the pair of quail to the aviary, I never had any sick birds. Maybe a coincidence!
