Posted April 30, 200619 yr I have a very young hen that shouldn't, by rights, be pairing up with anyone at this stage.....but just yesterday noticed she was involving herself in mating with anyone who'd have her of the males in the aviary. What a shock !! Her cere is indicating "ready to mate" but she is far too young. Too late, by the time I saw what was happening. I took her out of the main aviary, and within a day she was not looking well. I just examined her and she had an egg but was obviously eggbound. I had to act quickly as she didn't look at all well. I looked up the previous posts on this subject on this forum and taking advice ( also remembering I have been a vet nurse in th past and can do SOME things ) I treated her. I used some warm olive oil around her vent and applied gently pressure........out popped an egg. I do not know if this egg is viable or not, but have put the egg under a pair of blue birds....this mother is a cinnamon green bird. The "mother" of the egg seems okay, but I will put her in a hospital cage for the night with some warmth and see how she goes. Father of the egg unknown as there were a few suspicious males involved...a spangle and a dominant pied for two of them to start with. HMMMMMMMM........

April 30, 200619 yr Good job there Karen! Have you thought of putting all males & females in separate cages so they don't breed?
April 30, 200619 yr Author Good job there Karen! Have you thought of putting all males & females in separate cages so they don't breed? I have eighty budgies Karen, some are breeders and some are not. I have one huge aviary for most of them, a medium aviary for some others and various cage setups for pairing, for troublemakers, for babies and quarantines. This couldn't be anticipated, so I had to deal with it as soon as I knew it to be a problem. Â Glad you were able to help her out. How old would she be? 7 months old.
April 30, 200619 yr well even with your 80 budgies you know them and that is to be commended alot of breeders with so many birds wouldn't have see it or even cared. I am glad she is okay - hats off Karen.
April 30, 200619 yr Author well even with your 80 budgies you know them and that is to be commended alot of breeders with so many birds wouldn't have see it or even cared. I am glad she is okay - hats off Karen. I truly hope she is okay in the morning. She was looking brighter after the egg was "delivered". I put her up to the seed dish and she got in it and ate for awhile then fell asleep in the food dish. So I put her to bed in a warm and cozy spare nesting box for the night. I try very hard to know each and every bird, Lovey, thats my main reason for naming them. So, I can refer to the bird and keep track of it. Some people use leg rings I use names. I spend at least 2 hrs of every day IN the aviary watching and checking on relationships and on the lookout for potential problems. Any troublemakers are removed to other cages ( I call it jail time ) for whatever term is necessary to solve the problem, and I may give them a cagemate that suits their personality. Some jailbirds have jailmates and some don't. My previous veterinary nurse training comes in handy at times, although this was my first time with an egg binding situation. If it weren't for this website and all that I have learnt here I would not have known what to do so readily. Thanks to all who have helped me up to this point. I am a fast learner and will always put my birds first.  PS When I first told Ken about the bird and that I thought she had an eggbinding problem his response was........"Get straight on that budgie website and find out how to fix it !" A man of action  Definately never drinking the water at your place Too late....you already have Edited April 30, 200619 yr by budgiebird
