My Babies Are Starting To Arrive/are Here!

Two of my babies have hatched, one last evening at 8:00 and one today around 1:00. They are so darn cute! The mother laid a total of five eggs. The other three should be along within the next week. They have some crop milk in them, the older has more. He has a small air bubble that I need to keep an eye on, hope it will work out, I hate to have to burp the little guy. He's pretty vigorous and I would say that he is probably pumping to hard. We'll keep watching to see if it gets bigger. The little one is only an hour or so old, but he is beggin already! So, I think we are on are way!

My other hen laid a total of seven eggs, only two are fertile though. They won't start hatching for a few more days though.

Congratulations! can't wait to see more pictures when they are a wee bit bigger!

Well done and can't wait to see them grow and feather

Thanks! My son says they look like aliens and he can't believe that our beautifull birds started out looking that way! (Laughing out loud)

Congratulations!!! I love too see the little pink blobs and then watch the update pictures. Do you have any expectations for colouring/mutations?

These are the parents, I would say beings she's pied and he's split to pied that I will have a group of pieds. (Laughing out loud) You never do know though!

if they are both recessive pieds that is what they will produce

the only way they are split to pied is if a dominant gene is masking the recessive pied gene. So example if you had normal green he could be split to recessive pied. There is also dominant pieds that would automatically show as the mutation. Or they could be double factor pieds that look like recessives. If you put in a picture of them in the mutations along with the babies it will help. I am new but above is what I know of the pied gene. Pretty in my pictures is a sky blue recessive pied, and I just acquired a dominant pied about a week ago - he is not in my siggy yet.

As far as I know, he is a light green clearwing dominent pied and she is a yellow recessive pied. Wouldn't that still make him split to pied? I am not quite up to par on the genetics end. I am not breeding them for any specific color combinations at this point.

Since he is a dominant pied he can be split to anything really and if she is a recessive they will all look like him unless he is split to the recessive pied gene. Again you don't know if he carried any sex linked genes so that will make for an interesting combo. Make sense?

Yes that makes sense, he has the pied spot on the back of his head, so that is where I got the split to pied. Basically I am going to get little copies of mom and dad here.

I would say dad unless he is carrying the recessive pied gene

Baby #3 hatched yesterday morning (5/1/2006) before we came in the bird room (9ish). Here is the little critter.

She is doing a great job. I am so proud of her. The oldest one is only three days old in that picture and you can see he is getting so big! Baby #1 is weighing in at a whopping 7g and then #2 is 5 g and the 3rd at 2g and the last egg is 2g (and the last egg also has a very large pip so he will be here by tomorrow AM YEAH!). One egg was DIS, you could see that it had stop developing at about the 2 week mark. (I pulled it today) Not bad for a first clutch.

#4 arrived around 8pm last night. Here is the happy crew. I put paper toweling under them because mom refuses to leave the bedding alone. I don't want them straight on the wooden floor so they are on the pprtwl papertowels. They seem to be happy, and I can change it a few times a day as needed. Works for me.

She is feeding them super! They are totally stuffed. The babe that hatched last night was fed within 1/2 an hour.

Awwwe! Way to go mama. Keep the pics coming. Can't wait to see when they start to feather.

I will, they are sooooo darn cute I can't wait to see what they look like fully feathered. The oldest one looks to be gettin dark pin feathers along his spine. We will see. After all he is only 5 days old. (Laughing out loud).

I am glad that there is only 4 days between oldest and youngest, even those four days make a big diff in size. They all gained a gram since yesterday too. So that is good.

My other hen Tweety finally had a babe hatch last night at 9:30p. Out of seven eggs only 2 are fertile and the other babe will be here by the 8th. So there will be a few days between these guys.

The oldest one is getting darker under the skin of his head and a line of dark pin feathers are under the skin down his back. It will be interesting to see what he looks like soon.

oh my! they are all so adorable! i miss the babies, (Laughing out loud)

Thanks! I love them already! We banded the oldest three today (what fun) the oldest was due for banding tomorrow but the little porkers got so big so fast that I barely got the band on and he is only at 6 days! I went ahead and did 2 and 3 because they are not much behind and it was a trip getting them on also! Thank god my daughter was helping me (Laughing out loud) They complained the whole time and even tried to bite me! Now I am not so sure I like the personalities I see forming! (Laughing out loud) Then when I put them back in the nestbox on their clean diaper they beaked at the band like they wanted to take it off! It is obvious that they do not like their fancy new bracelets. (Laughing out loud)

thats tooo cute!

Here we are at 8 days to 4 days respectively. The oldest has little white feathers all over its little back and the flight tips seem to be clear so far, he is dark under the skin though. I do wonder what he/she is going to look like. The little porkers are getting huge!

They lined up in the container after weigh in and a diaper change. Arn't they cute?
