Cockroaches

When Phil moved into his apartment he was told "the previous tenants think they might have seen a cockroach" weeell now I'm seeing them ALL THE TIME!!!!!!!!!! I'm soooo grossed out. We complained to the managers months ago and "they'll send someone out"... no one ever came. We had roach bait out but I can't leave them in the places where they've been seen because I found Amira playing with one she found behind the garbage can (luckily I saw it right away)

http://www.ehw.org/Asthma/ASTH_Cockroach_Control.htm I found this website and it recommends trying borate powder and I wanted to get you guys to weigh in on it. I'd be putting it under the stove and fridge. I've tried all of the preventative measures, I'm a total neat freak so I don't even know what they could be finding that's worth coming back for, the only place that they could be coming from is in the heating ducts and under the door. I'm not sure if it's worth putting a poison near where my birdies play, I would never ever forgive myself if they got sick or died from it. Do you guys know of anything that's safe to use around birds that will kill the roaches?

i don't know if i would use anything like that if your wee birdies are out and about. not unless it was somewhere they definately couldn't get to. can you not harass the managers till they call someone out?

I'm afraid I can't recommend anything. However, I will just say this, we all know how fragile our little budgies can be, don't we? Well, a cockroach can withstand being frozen alive at sub-zero temperatures and will probably be the only creatures to survive a nuclear world war. I'm finding it hard to belive there can be anything budgie safe that will kill roaches. Perhaps you should consider sending the birds on a brief holiday while you sort out the roach problem properly. Do you have any friends or relatives you could take them to for a little while?

I could take them over to my apartment but I don't think they can bug bomb the apartment because our ducts are interconnected with 3 other apartments and roaches just come right back anyway. I don't know how well harassing the managers works: last year we had a rotting garbage smell coming out of the central air and a sludge that came through the ceiling tiles and they came out a few times and said "oh this is foul" but never found what it was... it took 5 months for them to fix the problem. I'd have to get all of this done reeeally soon, I finally found a subleaser to take over my portion of the lease, she plans on moving in June 1 or maybe a week before.

ew! is there anyway to block of the places they are coming in from? cockroaches give me the heebie jeebies!!

Heebie jeebies :budgiedance: I love you Scots.

We used this treatment for fleas for our dogs long ago, it is safe. Here is a site, and you can also review the MSDS chart there is a link to click to it. You can also call the avian vet around you and just ask them too. I will see if I can find anything else in regard to birds and borax. http://www.healthandcertainty.com/controll...Cockroaches.asp

ha ha!! yeah we have got some great phrases!! :P

I have a MAJOR phobia of roaches!

Get your birds out of your apartment for the weekend, spray well with RAID MAX it comes in a silver can, it works wonders! then a few days later wash everything down that you sprayed it on.

Dont try the other raid products, they dont work, MAX works really well.

Just make sure the birds are gone & you wash after!

(they might come back after a while, you dont know what filth some neighbors will live in!)

I don't think you will manage to rid yourself of them if they are breeding elsewhere. You will just be wasting your time. Really hassle the owner, you need to treat the source of them.

OMG I just hate them. When we lived in Mississippi there were just thousands of them in the house. Last night I had dreams that roaches were climbing on me. The only 2 things I'm afraid of are roaches and bee like things. Until this year I thought that roaches couldn't live in Minnesota... I'm going to try removing the duct covers and putting a screen in them and stuff steel wool into the places where they can come in from behind the walls, I'll place the roach baits where Amira can't get into them (Buster won't eat anything unless Amira does). I'm so paranoid, a baby roach can live in a place the size of a dime and an adult the size of a quarter. I think that the problem might be my neighbors, the people that live upstairs have a bunch of little kids and the people who lived here before January were just foul and unclean.

as a landlord they have responsibility to keep your place roach free, used to be landlords and we did have to have the bug guy come a couple times. They can come in from people's used frigs, washer and dryers, a package anything so sometimes it is not that anyone is dirty they just like to hang out :budgiedance:. So I would contact your landlord and in fact get the people in your building to complain, I can't imagine anyone else wants them around. Good Luck!

Hopefully they'll do something - we have 150+ apartments in the building. I think I just found out why they're sticking around - there's probably a whole box of cereal under the fridge (I don't eat cereal so it's probably been there a while), I think they might be eating stuff at the bottom of the bird cages as well soI'll start changing papers nightly rather than every other day.

ugh..it is amazing what it can look like under the frig, I moved our washer because it needs to be repaired and the dryer and it was nasty, I won't give you details but I am surprised we didn't have roachs :budgiedance::, I mean it is not like it is something you clean all the time you know. :P

You'd hate living here then :P Cockroach city, as our weather is just perfect for them. The only thing I would swear by are those 'cockroach bombs' but I know they aren't bird friendly, and you would need to wash every surface your birds could touch.

I inherited a million of em once with a house I moved into. The only thing that worked in the end was the baits where they crawl inside them to eat (the ones with EGG STOPPERS) ...they are a domed plastic disc so no poison outside to beeaten by anything else and they had peel and stick tabs so they could be put on walls, side of fridges and anywhere. It was the only thing that worked after trying everything else. And no more cockroach babies either. :P

:hap: Lin....I have a secret weapon......a size 10 mens workboot....works a treat, absolutely smashes them and you add a "drag" after the initial "bang" and well it's definately all over....you-1 and cockroach-0 :P:

I can't stand the thought of poisons being sprayed all over my house....YUK and I think with the bush over the road they would just be replaced by more! :P

I can't imagine how it would be in an apartment :fear with neighbours so close and their bugs comming over all the time! Must be annoying :P:D

Yes, thankfully we live in houses not apartments! When I moved into my house, it was crawling with cockroaches - including those huge outside ones. I finally got rid of the house ones, but outside I'm running a losing battle!

Oh I gave up on the outside a long time ago, they only come out at night here so as long as I don't see them I can ignore their presence. What I can't ignore is the huge poops I can see in the shed (tic tac size) could only mean one thing :P Rats......I can't stand rats.....the boot isn't going to help me :P

Try the council Bec, they should help you eradicate the rats as they are considered to be a health hazard. My council took reports of rats in the neighbourhood seriously a few years ago, and found the source (a neighbour) and eradicated them

I made Phil go harass the managers. I think they want to run when they see me coming, I'm always making them come fix something. I'll go and pick up some roach motels tomorrow. Ew I hate rats too, the barn has the world's best rat catching kitties. I've seen one of them getting rabbits bigger than she is. One of their dogs catches them and plays catch with them (it's really gross). :P

They eradicated your neighbours! :fear I wouldn't want to be on the wrong side of the council where you live. :fear  :hap:
