April 28, 200619 yr Oh the poor little mite. I think that is called feather duster, or something like that, and the poor little thing will die. It is believed it is caused by inbreeding
April 28, 200619 yr Well Lean, Many of us know of this disease and have read about it. This is called a "Feather Duster". You can read more about it on this site: Budgerigars Galore These budgies feathers grow continually and they die very young.
April 28, 200619 yr Unfortunately no... We all know our birds get weaker when they are moulting, because renewing they feathers is a big effort on their bodies. Feather Dusters are always growing their feathers, their system doesn’t know when to stop, so they get weaker and weaker…. Also, those big feathers make it impossible for them to see, to feed correctly, to fly….. and so on…..
April 28, 200619 yr :fear :fear Where is his little face and how does he eat l was thinking of the same thing l was also thinking how hard it must be for him to see. No hope for him at all that is too bad
April 28, 200619 yr If this story was from April 2004 would this unfortunate little bird still be alive ??
April 28, 200619 yr that is so awful - poor wee thing. how are people allowed to get away with doing that?? are there no rules on breeding? (sorry if thats a really stupid question - i don't know much about it! :ausb:)
April 28, 200619 yr Feather dusters is an accident. Yyou can get a baby like this from any sort of normal parents. So there isn't a way to know about the gene until you get one. They can live for a while if given extra special care but I wouldn't think Whipper would still be around.
April 28, 200619 yr I think feather dusters usually only live for a maximum of 12 months (if extremely lucky). No one knows really what causes this though there are alot of theories. My personal theory is it's a random gene that no one has any control of. Anyone watch those medical shows? Recently I saw one about a boy who's skin does not stop growing. Everyday he has to be scrubbed. Also I think I read a story of 2 girls from the same family with a similar version. Very distressing but ultimately random. Any healthy couple can have a child like this purely by chance. Same goes with animals.
