Posted April 23, 200619 yr Hello all, We have had casper now about 3 weeks, we have moved him near to the front room window, he can see all the birds outside on the bush, he gets really excited jumping around and chirping, Thing is he wont come out of his cage on his own we have his cage open nearly every evening and somtimes in the day but he just sits there, when we do get him out he flys up on top of the book case or curtain rail and will just sit there till we try get him to go back in his cage, just woundered if its because he more focused on the birds outside, any ideas, many thanks ian+sarah
April 23, 200619 yr If you've only had him for 3 weeks, he's probably just scared and that's why he sits up on the curtain rail. He's probably doesn't think he's safe anywhere lower down. It's a birdy survival technique - get as high as you can so the big bad thing can't get you. Also, it could be a case of 'I'm the king of the castle...', but I think it's more likely he's still nervous. Once you've bonded with him and he's more used to his surroundings, he'll probably become more sociable. Budgies quite often get restless when they're in their cage all day; they're energetic birds, so they'll often squawk, flap, jump and climb around the cage just to burn off some excess energy. Also, he might feel a little exposed with the window there. He won't know it's a window, so he might think he's open to whatever predators are out there and feel a bit panicky and unsettled. I know my birds seem happier when they have their cage near a wall. I guess they know that's one side of the cage they haven't got to watch for baddies. Maybe it's just a case of working to build a bond with him so that he feels afer around you and in his new home. Edited April 23, 200619 yr by Janette
April 23, 200619 yr When you let him out, I would work with a smaller room that he can not get to the top of the curtains. I will ask and no offense here have you though about getting his wings clipped for taming outside of his cage and then they can grow back in? Some members are totally against it so if you are I apologize. Pretty was clipped when I got him and it made the difference. Now he goes on the curtains and I can bring him down with my finger and he flys back to his cage which is eye level and he is comfortable. You may want to go to www.budgietalk.com for ideas on taming too.
April 23, 200619 yr I agree with Lovey about the wing clipping. Even if you just do it for a short period of time while you train. I have budgies that came to me clipped and budgies that came unclipped. I have never had much success with the unclipped birds. I know that people do have success, but I have 10 budgies and they have to share my attention. My birds that are (or were) clipped aren't as tame as some, but at least I can get them to step up to put them back in their cage.
