Posted April 22, 200619 yr I need some advice. The oldest baby (35 days old) has been out of the nest several times, but he always want to go back inside again. Now mum has begin to attack him, probably because she think his is old enough to be out permanently. He has not been out so long to be feed or tryed to eat by himself. What do I do? I was thinking of putting dad and baby in a separate cage? Mum is really hard when she is attacking, I don'nt want her to hurt the baby who's outside. There are four babies left in the nest and she is taking good care of them.

I would put dad and baby in a different cage but try to give enough seed and water on the floor of the cage for the baby to start to get the idea of feeding it self. Also keep an eye on the hen to see if she will start on any other chicks.
April 22, 200619 yr Author Thank you! The baby is a male. I will try next time he goes out of the nest to put him and the father together.
April 22, 200619 yr My mom's budgie did this with her one chick. She actually drew blood a couple of times on the poor little bub. We think she wanted to mate again and saw the baby as competition. Mom put the baby in a new cage with lots of seed on the floor and she started pecking around. That was back in December and the baby is fine. She is very fiesty and now chases her mama around.
