Foster Parent New Pics As Of 19-5-2006

I thought I had better start their own thread as they are solely responsible for the upbringing of the babies.

They are responsible for 2 of the Lacewing hens & Lutino cocks babies (3rd died yesterday), Mrs Robinson & Her Toy Boy's baby (no more leg splay!) and an Albino Hen & Dominant Pied cocks baby.

The hen took each new baby joyfully and is an excellent mum. I usually let her & her hubby breed but felt it would be prudent to have them as standby parents. Lucky for me they were available!

Anyway, here they are: most of you would recognise them:

These are the babies as of today. I took notice of someone's (can't remember who) and put a paper towell at the bottom of the nest box. That and handling Mrs Robinsons baby every 2nd day seems to have done the trick - can't notice any leg splay any more.

No, Mrs Robinson & Toy Boy don't have bub anymore, they stopped feeding him.

Not sure about the genetics side of things Kirby, the only thing I'm pretty certain of is when I breed my lutino's & albino's. Other than that I'm not real good at picking future results. :)

hahahahah..... (about not being able to pick results, other than albinos e.t.c) ;)

So is Boy Toy's baby in this lot then? Why werent they feeding them? Boy Toy didnt know what to do since he was so young? Or Mrs. Robinson didnt want to have more kids...(Laughing out loud)

Mrs Robinson & Toy Boy's baby is in this lot. S/he is the one stuck in the bottom right corner.

I can't answer your other questions Kirby, I'm not Dr Seuss! Mrs Robinson is a very good mother normally so I can't understand why she stopped feeding it.

This little one had splay leg & my handling didn't correct like it did with the other little baby so I used my 'handcuff' correction. The baby at this age instinctively pulls it's legs under it, this design prevents the legs from splaying to the side. The baby's legs now stick behind but because it was a side splay the baby can (and did) pull it's legs up and under itself. It helps that it has siblings to lean on. Fingers crossed that this permanately fixes the splay.

Thanks for the brilliant photo and explanation of this technique. It has been helpful to many of us I am sure. Thanks heaps Karen

Great shots Karen. I'm sure they will be helpful. You should post them in the health section too!

This is leg splay baby, I took the handcuffs off him (poor boy it did hurt) & it has been corrected I'd estimate 80% correction which is fantastic news!!

It took about 3 minutes to remove the cuffs during which time the poor boy struggled & showed me that baby do have strong beaks!

He will lead a perfectly normal life now, his stance looks odd but I took the photo right after removing the cuffs & he will readjust. He can run rather well now too!

Gorgeous babies! :) I'm glad you were able to correct the splay legs.

Oh nice pics. They are looking great. Are you keeping both of them? Would love to see a belly/front on shot of the grey. S/he looks great!

gorgeous babies!! I have to hunt myself down a lutino baby. :P Love the yellow.

I'm glad to hear that the splay legs are doing well. Good job Karen. :D
