That Kind Of Person

My roommate's sister has a budgie named Buddy that she's no longer feeding, watering, or cleaning up after. From what I've been told she's feeding him once every week in a large amount, he's only got icky dollar store seed. So now he's being brought here (so I can take care of him, news to me). This is the same toommate who tried to force Buster to drink vodka because it was "funny" (he now lives at my boyfriend's, I spend like 99% of my time there so it works out better). However, this kind of thing makes me so mad, why would you get a pet if it's too "inconvenient" for you to bother taking proper care of? It seems to be a common occurance now, do many of you know people like this?

This is where you would like to bring in the RSPCA to give a talk to the people involved. But it is too small for them and they are too busy. ;)

very sad situation, in a positve light he will have a chance some never do and die unloved.

I was at a bird store once buying seed, when an elderly gentleman brought his even more elderly father in to buy a budgie. They went to great lengths to pick out a "special little man" and as they walked to their car, I was thinking....I have some lovely baby budgies they could have had for half that price. Then I saw them put the budgie in his new cage about 10 inches by 10 inches by 12 inches high, with no room to fly in. They both lit up cigarettes and put the cage, budgie and themselves in their car to leave.....smoking heavily and saying ..." I hope this one lasts longer than the last one did " !! :D I was horrified and so very glad none of my babies was going to this home ;)

There are so many poor animals/birds/reptiles that are poorly treated. It is sad!! Sometimes I think I'd rather not know because it is so upsetting. I'm glad this little one is coming to you for care.

Oh my gosh! 10in x 10in, poor bird, and the smoking - that's not good for anything! I'm just irritated because I didn't know about Buddy coming, much less that I was taking care of him. The poor guy doesn't get out of his cage and appears to be blind and isn't able to fly anymore. It's weird though because they have tons of animals (they have a hobby farm) and he's the only one that isn't taken care of. He used to be very loved until the sister got a boyfriend. This all came up right after I'd been to my parent's for Easter, when I got there the dog's nails were so overgrown that when I cut them there was more than 1/3 inch taken off each nail. I don't think that she's had them clipped since I was last there in November. Apparently it's too time consuming to take her to the groomer for 30 minutes. Last year they let her poor nails get so long that it caused her toe to twist, breaking it, and the nail snapped completely off so she needed surgery. It just baffles me as to why anyone would do stuff like this.

:D And this is exactly why I blow my gasket every so often, there is so much abuse and neglect and these are the stories we actually "hear" about, how many other poor birds (animals) are involved. Bless you for taking him in, one of my fav rescue budgies of all time, Freddy, was abandoned on a cold porch and left to die but apparently he was left alone all the time with a big water dish, big food dish and little heat. He was almost catatonic when I got him but turned out to be one of my most BEAUTIFUL singers of all time, became very friendly with the other birds with no behaviour problems at all until he died a couple of years later of a ?endocrine disorder. I am sure Buddy will pick up under your loving care, good luck. :hap:

You have earnt your "BUDGIE ANGEL WINGS" Celeste............good on you :angel1: :angel1: :angel1:

I think cigarette smoke is often over looked by many pet owners.....people often say how bad it is to smoke around children but I hardly ever hear people concerned about smoking around pets. It's good to know there are others who feel the same way I do, no lungs were intended to have smoke in them and I believe every animal could suffer the same way humans can through passive smoking :hap:

Oh that is indeed very sad how anyone can do that to their birdie!!

Celeste, I know you're ticked that you're just expect to take it in and take care of it without you knowing it to start off with. But I'm sure that you'll take GREAT care of the little Buddy. I just hope that this little guy won't be going back to it's original owner?!?! You do deserve your 'Budgie Angle wings'.. :hap:

10' x10'... hmmm I won't tell that Goofy is currently sitting in a 10' x 13' quarantine cage then.. hehe... Oh he's only in it for Quarantine as all my other cages are occupy at the moment. Once he's done, he'll be in a 22'x22'x38' with either just Lemon, or Lemon and Hope. So three budgie max in that cage.

It just sickens me to read these posts. People can be just plain horrid!

I'm glad there are people like us willing to pick up the pieces.

I don't think that he has time to go back to her. From what I've been told he's quite elderly, they got him from a petshop where he was an owner turn in, and she's had him for 4 years. The owner is going off to college in August so she won't be able to take him back anyway.

I'm hoping for his sake the sister doesn't decide she just wants to keep him anyway. He should be coming on Monday if all goes well.

At least he gets out for a fly around though Cheeta :hap: This other little bird probably wouldn't have.

Nope he doesn't get to come out anymore because he flies into things. No one will take him out because of that, nor will they clip his wings so they can at least take him out to play.

  • 2 weeks later...

It is so sad when you hear stories like this and it really makes me mad when people take birds and animals on and then get bored with them. It also makes me mad with the attidue some people have when they say it is only a bird.

My husband and I was in the vets one day with SB when he was ill and my husband was talking to a man that showed budgies and his attitude was get rid of SB and get another one.

When SB was born he had a disabled wing and a disabled foot and the person it belonged to wanted to pull SB's neck and get rid of him. My husband went into one and said no he would take him and brought him up from a tiny chick only a few days old. SB lived to nine years old and he returned the love we gave him a thousand times over. For the last few years SB could not fly and he was a brilliant runner and in all the time we had him he never let his disabilities get him down he was the happied budgie anyone could have and you could do anything with him. The only problem was you had to share everything you ate with him. Every animal has a right to live as long as it is not in pain. sorry I will get off my band wagon now.

Well done Celeste in all you are doing I am sure you will be rewarded many times over

An update on Buddy: she decided to keep him

I really hate it when people say "it's just a bird" too.

OMG why? I would work on responsible ownership and how to take care of the bird...

  • Author

because he's "her pet and she loves him", it's really frustrating.

she probably does have a great attachment to him, so here is where all you can do is give her some budgie book, teach her responsible pet ownership in a gentle manner.

  • Author

I'd give her my budgie book but there's some stuff in there that I was like "say what?!" to, even I knew better than to follow that advice, I need to return it.

yes I know it would be nice if she was open minded to become an involved member of these boards, I have learned so much in my 8 months of being here.

:hap: Maybe you should suggest that Buddy might be better off with you, you have done research and decided that she hasn't the personality (although she is a fine individual, you must stress this as not to offend her) or the time required to take care of a budgie and you have become quite attached to him and would like to carry on taking care of him. Some people should NEVER ever be pet owners just like some people should never have children but we can't control that, with animals there is a little leeway.

My roommate said she'd sit down with her and talk to her this weekend, they don't have a home internet connection so she wouldn't be able to join the board  . I know I've learned loads of good information in just a few short months.

I guess none of this is going to happen: Buddy spent the weekend sitting at the bottom of his cage all fluffed up, it looks like he's not very long for this world. He's an older budgie :hap:
