Hello all,

I just need some advice really no what you guys think I should do, I have a baby budgie which I think had a loss hip joint which means his leg sticks out and he can't stand up. He is still just a baby and only just growing his feathers.

He is not in pain and I can move the hip into place although he can't keep it there. I shall be taking him to the vet soon but I am sure there is nothing they can do for him. He is very happy in himself and is eating etc.

I am sure the vet will say that he will always have this problem with his leg and should be put down, but I really want to give the little lad ( I say lad I have no idea what it is yet) a chance at life although that life may well be one which needs help along the way.

Of course if he can't manage at life, i.e. sits in his poo and can't walk about then I would have him put down as that is not fair, but he may well manage to get some use of his leg as he is trying and can move about and sit up at the moment.

Do you think I should give him a chance and if he can get about a bit ( he should be able to fly) let him live out a life as a disabled budgie?

Reply here and I'll copy it onto the Fancy Rats forum or reply on FR if you have an account, please! I've referred rattyhaven here so she may be along soon :bluebudgie:

He's splay legged, not missing a hip joint. At least that's a lot more likely. Splay legged birds can live happy lives provided their owners set their cage up so that they can move around easily. Platforms are good to use as well as lots of things to climb on. If he falls a lot, it's good to try and keep the perches fairly low and something soft on the bottom to pad his fall.

It would help to have a picture to see just how bad it is and it would help even more if this person said how old the budgie is. There's a small window of time in which you can actually correct the problem.

At any rate, the budgie needs to see a vet and get an opinion. Advise them to take it to an avian vet, not a regular one.

Any idea where she got the budgie? Did she breed them or was it given to her?

Rattyhaven actually owns a rescue called Ratty Haven, so I'm assuming a member of the public brought the budgie in to her.

I'm sure she'll be online later on today so we'll be able to get more information soon :bluebudgie: Thanks for your quick reply.

Sounds like a splayed leg to me also but she really needs to get the bird to a vet for a full look over :D

I had a little girl budgie that had BOTH her legs splayed and she lived a very happy life (till the snake got her :hap: ) I made a few landing platforms for her to sit on easily but because she had been this way since she was little, she wasn't aware that she had a problem and got about just as easy as the other birds and would perch on the thin perches too.. She even went on to lay a few eggs but was victim to a snake before she had a chance to mother them..

Here she is..

Even though both her legs flicked out to the sides she managed to work out how to best get around..

Cheers

:ausb: Hope the little guy can overcome his disability but vet care is definately required.

Hopefully the little one is young enough to be fixed. It does sound like a splayed leg. I saw a post some where that had great diagrams and how to fix it info (not that I would, I'd go to the vet, (Laughing out loud)) let me look for it!

*edit*

here it is...

I'm with everyone else and it sounds like a splayed leg. By the sounds of the age of the bird this person might have a chance at fixing it if she acts now. By taking the baby to a avian vet.

Bad news, the little guy died yesterday

Thanks for all your help anyway.

Oh i am so sorry for your loss! nature can be really cruel sometimes.

:D Oh dear, there must have been more happening with the little one than a splayed leg, so sorry to hear this. :)

Ohhh, I'm sorry to hear that. rip little one
