Chronic Egg Laying

;) Just received an email with all sorts of information in it and one of the topics was chronic egg laying in budgies. This made me think of Phoebe's Comet and Star so i thought id post this as i'm not sure if it was suggested before..

How is chronic egg laying treated?

First, make sure your bird is eating a proper diet so as not to become malnourished. A calcium supplement may be appropriate at these times. If you are removing eggs as they are laid, this practice should be stopped as it can encourage the bird to lay more eggs. Boiling the eggs and replacing them will sometimes break the cycle. The environment can be changed to try to reduce egg laying by decreasing the number of hours the bird is exposed to light and changing the location of the pet's cage. Owners may need to decrease the amount of time spent with the bird until egg laying ceases or is reduced.

Not sure if this will help anyone in the future but there you go...

;) Thanks Una, I never thought about boiling the eggs (nor did anybody else) but I did leave them in the cage until they virtually turned black and the fake eggs didn't work at all. All the birds are continuing to get calcium supplements in their vitamins and Star looks just great (she loves her vegetables, gobbled down sprouts, romaine, shredded carrot and brocolli today). She is doing okay in my bedroom where she has been for over three weeks now, no eggs or tearing up paper for over a month either and she can really see a lot out of my bedroom window, in fact everything has been fine with reduced calling except for the big escape from my bedroom the other day and into the living room when Comet was out. They madly started smooching and carrying on like nothing had ever changed and my landlord and I had a terrible time restoring order and getting everybody back in their cages. So it really is a "Fatal Attraction" scenario and the only solution would now (sadly) seem to be getting Star into an only budgie home and the adopter will have to followup with myself and the rescue shelter lady. Thanks again. ;)
