Posted April 11, 200619 yr We got a new budgie this morning. He/she is only about a month old and pure yellow, if it wasn`t for the beek you would think the bird was a canary! Also, the eyes are red like an albino. What type of budgie is he/she and are there any special requirements for them compared to regular budgie? The bird is very small and slender compared to our older birds, is this normal for the age or typical for this type of bird? Thanks.
April 11, 200619 yr his/her mutation is a Lutino (Karen a member breeds them) and they are just budgies of a different color . Yes that is normal for a younger bird to be smaller and slender.
April 11, 200619 yr Also sounds like you have the smaller pet type budgie rather than the show line budgie which are breed larger for a standard. Don't need to do anything extra than any other budgie. I'm moving this to this to the correct area
April 11, 200619 yr Did you get him/her from a pet store? Id so he should be older than a month. Breeders usually don't let the chicks go until they are at least 45 days old. I don't release mie until they are.
April 11, 200619 yr Yes the bird came from a pet store, the guy said the bird was about one month old but of course they probably don`t know for sure!! Thanks. How old will the bird be before we can tell the sex by looking at the cere? I understand when they`re young, they all look the same?
April 11, 200619 yr If you can put up a photo we can tell you now. I usually sex my budgies about 28 days old. The ceres are different in male and female even at a young age. (General rule) ....Though I have had a bird that I couldn't tell the sex of and still not sure... She/he is 12 months old now. Edited April 11, 200619 yr by daz
April 11, 200619 yr I think Eterri has a link on her signature to a good site that showes different ceres. You can also read through this site - Budgies Galour There should be some good ideas there.
April 11, 200619 yr Welcome to the forum. I bet your Lutino is gorgeous. I have a little Creamino (white with yellow face/red eyes) and she has stolen my heart.
April 11, 200619 yr Hi! Is your budgie anything like this one? Budgie Place Edited April 11, 200619 yr by LusoPeriquito
April 11, 200619 yr Hi! Is your budgie anything like this one? Budgie Place Yes, but smaller and slimmer. Also, I believe the cere is more of a flesh type colour. I`ll go an take another look. It`s funny when he/she chirps, sounds more like a policeman`s whistle (because it`s a young bird) and the little guy get`s drowned out when Joey starts his noise!!
April 11, 200619 yr If a true lutino, the cere stays pink and doesn't turn blue to indicate boy if a boy.
April 12, 200619 yr if you check out Pretty in my signature, lutinos cere stay pink like recessive pieds like my Pretty,. if they are males, if they are females they tend to be a more tanish, light white pink and white rings around the nostrils. Edited April 12, 200619 yr by lovey
April 12, 200619 yr If a true lutino, the cere stays pink and doesn't turn blue to indicate boy if a boy. Here is a picture link to help: Lutino Male
