How does water conditioner for fish ponds and budgies mix? I'm in the middle of making a frame for the pond to go in the aviary, but have only just realized it might not be any good health wise to actually install it.. Anyone know or have a pond in their aviarys that could give me the ins and outs of water conditioner?

Cheers

I know this sounds silly, but I would be very worried about budgies drowning, especially babies. Also, the attraction of mosquitos and other problems with having a source of standing water around constantly.

As for the conditioner, what's in it?

It was my thought too about the pond and the depth of water....baby budgies drowning. I had a budgie nearly drown in a container of water once that was too deep. If I wasn't watching and pulled it out, it would have drowned. ;)

Here is the best place I found information and it says that the water should be no more then an inch in a fountain for finches and canaries because they don't have webbed feet and can drown, well since budgies are not much larger I would think the same for them. http://www.backyardaviary.com/faq.htm Even wild budgies, live in dought conditions and find water it is usually not deep at all, so nature has evolved them. I personally wouldn't chance it.

I think a pond in the aviary would be a great idea. I have seen one in an aviary for finches and they love it.

As eterri said I would be conserned about drowning but I would be more conserned about your mosquitos.

You would have to have a good filter and pump system to keep the water moving and clean. It would have to be positioned where the babies can't get to.

Una remind me do you do colony or closed breeding??? If Closed breeding there won't be a worry about the babies.

:( Thanks everyone, The pond will have a small wire mesh covering so the most the birds will get wet if they land on it is their toes, there will be many tropical fish in the pond to keep the mosquitos away so they wont have a chance of breeding and i also have got a water filter and pump system with a cute lil fountain to keep the water moving.. Umm all i was worried about was the water conditioner and the budgies  the rest of the pond is %100 safe and no risk of drowning accidents etc...

Cheers
