Don't Know What To Do - Any Help Appreciated

okay so I have posted a couple of times about my budgie Theo but I am getting quite worried now.

Theo has been ill for a couple of weeks with what at first appeared to be a respiratory problem. He was sitting fluffed-up with laboured breathing, a bobbing tail and sleepy eyes but never stopped eating and did not seem to be on death's door. I took him to the vet who gave him a course of baytril. This was a nightmare as Theo has never been tame and each night I had to catch him and syringe it into his mouth as great stress to the both of us. The baytril had no effect and after 9 days I took him across London to an Avian Vet.

The Avian Vet, who seems very good, took a sample of his droppings and gave him an injection of antibiotics (not baytril) with added minerals etc. He told me that Theo is underweight and he thought he had a pancreas problem. The heavy breathing apparently is because 'he hurts'. The next day he confirmed that Theo has a pancreatic problem that is none life-threatening and sent me some digestive enzymes to put on his food. Again it is very hard to feed Theo as he is not tame but I managed to get him to eat bits of millet.

He has been on the enzymes for 3 days now. Over the weekend he had a personality change and turned into super budgie! He was flying to us, sitting on our shoulders, singing away, exploring the room fully (he has never done any of this before), waddling along the floor, sitting on our heads. My other budgie looked amazed as if to say 'who is this imposter budgie?'. However, he remained very fluffed up throughout.

Yesterday I noticed blood round his mouth. When he eats bits of blood come off on the seed hulls. Still he remained fluffy but hyperactive. I should also point out that he eats like a pig. Of course I panicked and rang the vet who says it is a reaction to the enzymes (I admit that I may have overdosed him in my eagerness to get some in him) and to lay off them for a couple of days and give him water and milk to line the crop.

I have done this and today there was no blood but all he wanted to do was fluff-up and sleep (though he ate some seeds and basil). His droppings appear normal but I am just so scared he is going to die. I just wondered whether or not anyone else has any experience of this of words of advice.

Regards,

Natalie

:ausb: Oh dear, sounds like he is picking up but you had best ring your vet again and tell him/her what you just told us, get well soon Theo. :(

I think your vet is definately the one to talk to about this. Good luck

oh, i hope everthing works out for little theo. I myself have never had this problem, so I cant offer any good advice.

***huggs*** i hope all goes well

HUGS! The blood would make me nervous too! Best check with your vet again. Better safe than sorry!

Just keep in touch with your vet over the next week or two until you have him in a good routine.

Medication will help but you will have to get the dose right for him. This is where your vet will help.

Good luck and let us know how you go

Thanks very much all of you.

There is now no blood and Theo is much better. The vet said to halve his dose and today he is not fluffed up, is singing away and doing tricks to get millet. I still can't get over the dramatic change in personality but there you go!

:P Great news! :D
