(medium density fibre) This is poisonous even to us.
April 3, 200619 yr Author Some of the wood used is MDF and melamine and ply in the areas that may be chewed. I think we all try and do better by our birds with regard to using less toxic substances and I am aware of mdf problems. But even so called safe plywood uses a carcinogenic formaldehyde based glue to bond the layers. When the hollow is cut out to house the birds eggs all that glue is exposed right there to contact with the bird, eggs and babies. Unless you can find great hollow tree segments that budgies are willing to use and don't take up too much space...... we do what we can. Unless your bird chews up her box to remodel it, I would hope the box is safe when lined with nesting materials. Is a no win situation.
April 3, 200619 yr thanks Budgie bird that one I didn't know.... I still stay clear from MDF but you have me thinking about the ply wood now.
April 3, 200619 yr Author There's lots to be discovered when you go on an information hunt. Like I am allergic to artificial sweetener......did you know it ( aspartame and others ) becomes a formaldehyde cocktail when exposed to heat ??

I have been using MDF and Pine in construction of breeding cabinets and MDF, CHIPBOARD and PLYWOULD for quite a while now and have not encounted any problems.
April 15, 200619 yr Well I think i'll stay with Ply. I'll put a pine base in just in case. I have spent yesterday building two nursary boxes for the chick. A sort of half way house.. from the breeding cage to the flight. One of the cages. the front is inter changible to a breeding cage. there is a breeding cage front on top of the box. Front I made the tray removible for cleaning. The two finished ones. I made them match the existing ones. Don't worry I'll be filling them with toys and other perches lower down. I used two types of perches a 12mm and a 19mm to give the feet some excersize. I have to make the nest boxes.. maybe tomorrow. Here is an example of the type. i'll use. Inside. This is how it goes on the cage. I like the idea of putting them on the outside. Gives more room inside. OH and I am taking orders Edited April 15, 200619 yr by daz

April 16, 200619 yr Thanks you SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much Daz! Im going to make some for my pairs in the summer. This way, i can have Chico and Ariel in one, Kirby and Belle in another once Belle is old enough, then Mickey and Tango in the flight cage. I have a nice big wrought iron cage...that the breeding cages will fit inside them, since my mom wants only 'one cage'. This way, i will still only have one cage, but two smaller ones in it If i were to build two, thats all i need to get going! :) Kirby
April 22, 200619 yr okay daz, put me down for 2! I just chucked of double breeding cage today so need 2 more.

April 22, 200619 yr Wow Karen! To me that means you can fill the backyard with aviaries Your old Dad's getting soft in his old age
April 23, 200619 yr Kirby, a lady never tells her age. But since I'm no lady I will tell you - I'm 33. I think your father doesn't want to take a chance of you losing interest - which usually starts to happen at your age. When do you get your driving licence? Lin, I think you are right! Time to save up for more aviaries before the softy changes his mind!
April 23, 200619 yr hahahha, 33!!! Your a young women! Im 16, and im scared to get my driving liscense I went driving on the beach at my cottage last year, (It was at our cottage, and it was september so no one was one the beach, dont worry! ) And i was driving along practising! But the thing was, there was not a single thing on the WHOLE BEACH! Other than one sign that said 'no pets allowed'....guess what i hit So ya, if i hit that, think how bad im going to be when im on a busy rode! Well ya, i have LOTS of pets, and they know i looove them to pieces, and i want to become a owner of a petshop, i just dont think im comfortable with them being outside overnight, in Canada, and when i move in July 24th, to the new house, your backyard is half the size of the one we have now So i dont think anyroom! (Laughing out loud) So yes.. SAVE UP EVEN MORE!!! hahahahahahha! That would be splended if you had another! So you have 2 now right? Thena ll the breeding cages? or... Kirby
April 24, 200619 yr Kirby!! haha Kirby!! Fancy hitting the only thing on an empty beach!! Sorry, I'm done. ahem, I am now!! I have one larger aviary, one small aviary, 1 patio aviary & a six pack breeder cage set up. I just threw out a double cage breeder as it has a hex on it.
April 24, 200619 yr Daz you dont have any relations in england that are also handy with wood and saws do you? they are really impressive and i wish we could get boxes like them in england you people in Oz are really lucky, you have a great network of breeders and suppliers(of equipment) im very jealous jason
April 24, 200619 yr Well my routes are in England (whales actually) & Australia. But no I don't know any one there.
April 26, 200619 yr Hey Daz, Those are great looking breeding cabinets. I was just wondering since shipping them over to Perth may be a bit too much, so I was wondering if you could tell me where you got those front panels (wire thing) from? I am considering making one or two to use as quarantine cage as the one I have now is a little on the small side. I'd be able to get all the other material, but that front panel I can't locate anywhere here in Perth. Any suggestions? Thanks.
