Posted April 2, 200619 yr Hi - I dont know much about birds. We have a 1.5 yr old male budgie. Has been in perfect health. I think he may have injured himself last Friday night, the window was left open and was flapping in the wind. Beakie (the bird) was near the window hunched up on the sofa. Normally he would have put himself away in his cage, which is 5 foot off the ground. He was all wobly, like he had injured himself. He was normal and with it - alert. But very unstable on his feet, like he was falling forward. He could fly but not well. He still went up to the dog. I put his cage on the ground and he put himself away. Saturday he went down hill, and could no longer perch. Have not seen him eat or drink. I thought he was going to die. Today, maybe he's a little better - not really tho. He is appearing very tired/sleepy, but is still with it. He seems to be fighting. I took him out and he flew a bit - his wings seem to function well enough. But his neck seems to be out, his head keeps sort of swivelling around, and he will flop over onto his back. I noticed he passed faeces today, but have not been able to get him to drink or eat - I think thats why he appears weaker now. What can I do - is there anything a vet could do to help? Should I try to get some sugar water down him or something - I am trying to keep him warm and quiet. Does it sound like he is injured, or could he be sick? It looks to me that he has injured his spine on the flapping window. Its been 48 hrs now- I thought he would have died by now if it was a serious injury. I would really like to save him? Steve :ausb: :grbud:
April 2, 200619 yr Get him to an avian vet as soon as possible. That's the very best you can do. Until then, keep him warm and comfortable and calm in his cage. But the only way to help him really, is to get him to the avian vet as soon as you can. It sounds very serious and the faster he gets there the better. Good luck and please let us know how it goes.
April 2, 200619 yr Yep tell them it's an emergancy so they will fit you in. I say he could have suffered a stroke but I'm no where near and expert. It's good your here asking for help but all we can say here is get Beakie to the vets. Keeping him and and quiet is good. NO more fly time until he is checked out so as not to stress him more. If he eats veggies give him his fave he may eat some and get a bit of strengh from that and/or even try some millet on the cage of the floor if he is having trouble stayin on the perch or right beside him so he doesn't have to move. If he is sleeping let him to kept his strengh. I have my fingers crossed that he pull through this.
