Introducing Bessie

Please meet my sweet Bessie who is about 2 months old. We got her a few days ago and she seems quite at home already playing with her toys and climbing around the cage like a little monkey. She is supposed to be a friend for Booboo but Booboo is basically ignoring her. She spent one night in Booboo's cage but is now in her own. Booboo is a male and at least 3 years old. How can I get them to bond?

She is very sweet :)

Not sure if you knew this being new so I will just give you my thoughts on introducing them so soon. First you should always quarantine your budgies from each other for at least 30-45 days. This lets you make sure that your new budgie doesn't have any underlying illness, mites etc that can be transferred to your existing budgies. Also it will give you time to bond with your newest addition.

Anyways - welcome here glad to have you around :)

:)

To get them to bond, put them together once quaranteen is over, or when you get a clean bill of health from the vet. Once together, they might not be bonded right away, but if together for a while, they will get use to eachothers company, then sooner or later they will start feeding eachother, playing with one another, and possibly even breed in the future. It works out good since most hens like to have an older male to flirt with, so your 3-4 year old male will be a 'prince' to Bessie soon...**hopefully** :)

Too late for the quarantine I'm afraid, Bessie spent her first night in Booboo's cage but they didn't go near each other. Also I don't want them to breed, just be company for each other. Bessie is now in her own cage which is beside Booboo's and seems to like it that way, climbing all over it like a little monkey and playing with the toys.

We had another male budgie (Bobby) who shared Booboo's cage. They were a bit territorial at times but apart from that got along well, mimicking each other etc. Unfortunately Bobby died suddenly after being with us for only four months.

Apart from looking smaller than a lot of other budgies, Booboo seems to be in perfect health. Booboo has a hatch on top of his cage and gets out several times a day for a fly around etc. I would like to train Bessie to do the same as well as interact with Booboo, but no breeding as we don't want babies.

keep us updated, with pictures etc...

You shouldn't have any babies, as long as you don't introduce a nesting box, and if you see any funny stuff :(, with them being in separate cages it makes it easy to keep it under control. But I have read that most are successful kept together okay.

:( Nice to meet you Bessie, you are a pretty bird.

This morning I opened Booboo and Bessie's cage doors, put them against each other and Bessie jumped straight into Booboo's cage. Apart from some competition over the mirrors they seem to be getting along fine. There has been no absolutely no physical contact between the two though .. Here they are:

They are both so pretty. I'm sure it won't be any time at all and they will make some contact.
