Posted March 28, 200619 yr I have a really BIG problem...well at least for me. There are mites ALL over my outdoor aviary and i just can't seem to get rid of them. I've looked through previous topics about mites and tried all the products suggested but they just came back. They're all over the ground (we have 1/2 dirt 1/2 tile and the mites are on the dirt half) and in the nesting boxes. And whenever i go in there they're on me in 2 seconds. Some are black and some are red. The red ones are filled with blood. I've done all i can do, so can anybody PLEASE HELP ME!!!! :glare: Thanks, L&L
March 28, 200619 yr I think you need to get strong stuff from the vet. Stop the breeding now and let this lot fldge then remove the box and clean them out BIG time. I would think the ground and each and every bird needs to be treated.
March 28, 200619 yr With the ground, I would be digging out the top 6 inches of soil, and replacing. Only do this once you have treated the birds, and scrubbed the entire cage. Perches, breeding boxes, food containers, toys, get into all the nooks and crannies.
March 28, 200619 yr Thank you guys so much! I'm still aa bit worried about re-infestation though. On another topic i saw that budgies could get mite shots. Is this true and if it is, does it work and is it affordable?
March 28, 200619 yr Well, they can get a treatment that is just one dab behind their necks. To be honest, they don't sound like the normal mites birds get. Have you popped bits of branches, or logs in the cage? Sounds like something that might have crawled off them. If you make sure you do a really thorough scrub of all the nooks and crannies, remove the soil, and treat the birds before putting them back in, I doubt if you will have further problems
March 28, 200619 yr It does to me lin I just can't think of their name. Red mites?? They feed off the birds at night then fall off in the morning if have something to make them show up they look like red dots. Edited March 28, 200619 yr by Nerwen
March 28, 200619 yr Sounds like red mites to me too. Try this info http://www.birds-online.de/gesundheit/gesp...n/milben_en.htm
March 29, 200619 yr Thanks, all that advice has really helped me. That website was really helpful too :dbb1: Should i just clean all the branches really well or should i replace them altogether? Sorry for being such a pain but i really don't want to have to do this again.
