Non Stop Beak Movement

A week ago i bought a baby budgie(10-12month) and put him with my other 4 budgies in a large aviary, i noticed the other day it looked like he had a husk caught in his throat, as he was opening and closing his beak like he was trying to cough something up. Well tonight when i got home that is all he is doing except it doesn't look like he's coughing anything up just opening and closing his beak, and his beak looks like it has been chipped at the point(quite a large chip like a bit has broken off). I'm going to takehim to the vet tomorrow if his symptons persist, does anyone know what it could be? (i've searched the forum but could not find anything relative)

usually when they do that they are yawning

A vet trip is a good decision, let us know.

Hi Wilgets

Is he doing that constantly? And does his tail bob? One of mine did that, looked like he had something stuck in his throat and kept doing that same thing, and it was a respiratory infection and the vet put him on antibiotics.

I agree about the possibility of a respiratory infection, and also bear in mind that a birds beak is FULL of nerve endings, so therefor very sensitive. If it is quite badly chipped, he may be in some pain. How is he eating? It might be an idea to offer him some soaked sees, soft eggfood, a bit of soaked brown bread, anything that he dosent have to work his little beak on for the next couple of days or so (check this with your vet)

I hope all goes well, please come back with a follow up report because we worry about these little feathered ones!

Well it seems like his beak isnt as chipped as i first thought, it's still chipped but it must have had something stuck to it yesterday to make it look worse than it is! Which would explain why he kept opening his beak.

Will still keep a close eye on him but thanks for those who replied.
