Posted March 17, 200619 yr I have just discovered that the single chick belonging to Bubblegum and Skye isnt being fed anymore. Mum will get in the nest with a view in mind to laying eggs again but ignores the baby now two and a half weeks old. Had no food in its crop. I have taken it out of the nest and fed it with a sloppy mix of pumpkin and corn baby food mixed with some multigrain baby rice cereal. It has taken the food and is now resting in its makeshift nest of a tissue box. Should I continue in this way or try and foster it to Spook and Casper who have three babies a bit older ?? Any suggestions ???
March 17, 200619 yr Unless you want to continue hand feeding it yourself I'd foster it to the other pair. They will make sure it is okay.
March 17, 200619 yr Author I will put it in with them now and watch closely. Thanks for help. Meet LUCKY. ...Lucky is in with Caspers babies and Bubblegum and skye have been put in the main aviary with no nesting boxes. Edited March 27, 200619 yr by budgiebird
March 17, 200619 yr Author So far so good. Spook has been in and out of the nesting box feeding babies and so has Casper. Will keep checking.
March 17, 200619 yr Author All is well....thanks for advice. The new Mum and Dad Spook and Casper have fed this baby to bursting point and it is happily cosy with 3 other babies. It looks like the others a bit and similar size. The new Mum and Dad have been feeding other fledglings on occasion so I suppose it's no surprise that they have accepted this one so well. It was terribly dehydrated when I found it and I was very worried for its life. All looking good here now. Thankyou Daz and Karen and others
March 17, 200619 yr that is wonderful, it is amazing how all creatures are taken care of even if fostered
March 17, 200619 yr It amazes me to hear of budgies fostering so easily. I always thought that birds would reject anything that smelled of humans or was not their own. I guess that was a big misconception!
March 18, 200619 yr Author Me too. They are very social and caring little birds at the best of times aren't they ? Day two and this baby has its adoption papers signed in triplicate. It's just one of the gang now in Spook and Caspers box. Very cool end result
March 18, 200619 yr Budgie Bird mark those two as foster parents and good feeders... you may need their sevices in the future. Edited March 18, 200619 yr by daz

I guess that was a big misconception! I heard a few years back that it is a misconception, and if you find a baby bird, and you have the ability to put it back in the nest then do so. Some do fall out but sadly some are kicked out too by the parents because they are sick, the parents can't handle all the babies or whatever. Remember birds do not have a acute sense of smell, I believe even less then humans. It is not needed for them to find their food, they rely on their eyesight.

I guess that was a big misconception! Shawna a lot of that is true but Budgerigars have grown up with humans, we are part of their existance. That is why it is so easy to train them. (I say easy in relation to other animals)
March 27, 200619 yr Author Thanks to the new mum and dad Spook and Casper, the rejected baby of Bubblegum and Skye is now doing very well
March 27, 200619 yr :bluebudgie: That is an old wive's tale that birds won't take offspring back when you return them to the nest. Unless the baby has fledged,at the Wildlife Shelter, we are always advising people to put the baby back if at all possible rather than jumping the gun and bringing it into us. Glad your little guy made out okay budgiebird. :ausb:
