Sexing Budgies

Today I was at the pet store looking at some babies (just looking!!) And I had a hard time telling if some of them were male or female, any of you have any tips on how to tell what gender they are when they are so young? :ygbudgie:

When they are really young, the females will have a purple/blueish cere with white around the nostril. I have seen quite a few people who bought a "baby boy" only to find out later it was a girl!

With the albino/lutinos it gets more complicated!

misty has some great shots of her girl...

and if you check out my siggy, you will see a male purplish pink cere but do note that sum males can have nostril rings too but they are more transparent or purplish. Pretty was like that I thought in the beginning he was a she, but he was a he as the store attendant said.

Basics are:

Young female- purple/ light blue cere with white ring around the nostrils.

Adult female- a light whitish brown cere to a dark chocolate colour

Young male: Nice clear pink colour

Adult male: A clear bold blue

another tip is that sometimes females tend to have more flat ceres and the males seem to stick out a bit. :hap:

another way is to just observe them too, the males feed the females, and the males tend to display more of the courtship with the bobbing heads and trying to feed.

well when i first had purchased my budgies with both purple nostrolees and they were only about 3 months and now i have both of them and both turned out to be males. so i guess u you can just get them and c see what dey they will turn in to

Hello godsdrummer209, and welcome. I've got to say though, it took several re-reads on my part to understand what you were trying to say. Please don't use shortcuts, as it makes it so hard to understand. It's also in the rules and regs here.

I agree sometimes it's a tossup as to what sex you have. This isn't very light, but in these pictures there is only one male - the rest are baby girls - all about 6 weeks old. Can you guess the male?

I hope I could help!!!

Rainbow my guess is the one in front of your green bird is the male.

  • 3 weeks later...

Also with previous experience you will know that females bite alot harder

hence the term "bites like a female"

Eterri, that was a fantastic link. I was just questioning how to sex a budgie since I will be choosing a baby from a breeder in a couple of weeks *can't wait!* and your link was very clear and understandable. Also, I wasn't sure what the mutations were (recessive pied, etc) so you also helped me alot there as well. Thanks!!!

Yep eterri's site is great :) Good luck with your picking Karma-k.

Lovey- yep :) I think it's cloud.

petey- most of the times that's true but there are exceptions. As in wether the bird is hand tame or not, if they aren’t all will bite very hard in panic. Sometimes the males learn at a young age that biting gets a funny response and so continue to bite harder and harder and then other time you just find a male that can bite hard. Rainbow has males that have a deadly beak compared to females.
