Birch For Perch?

Featured Replies

I've been looking online to see which trees might be safe for making branch perches. I have lots of birch on my property and saw the perfect branch on the ground this morning. However, I've read some places that is safe, and others that it is not. Does anyone know for sure?

Here is a good reference site http://www.mdvaden.com/bird_page.shtml

Thanks Lovey! I think I'll peel the bark to be sure. And I was glad to see lilac on there. I have a lilac bush that has gotten away from me so I can trim it back and make use of some of the branches!

Thats such a great link!

So you can use the birch right?...as long as they dont eat the bark?

I ended up using poplar. And I must say they are a hit with the birds!!! They have been scurrying up and down them all morning. The bark is off two of them. Over time I'm going to replace all of the dowel perches with natural perches.

thanks for noticing that Daz...I appreciate it for sure. You see this information and don't know it is all good until someone with more experience comes along.

Well concidering they live in Eucalyptus trees in the wild I though that was strange saying it was toxic....

Eucalyptus leaves and nuts are toxic in dried flower arranging. I lost one of my birds from that. They treat the folage with something special to make it last and it is what is toxic.

hmmm maybe that is what they mean, and they should be advised on correct information.
