Is He Ill?

Featured Replies

For the last few days he's been really puffed up and seems to be sleeping a lot. His eyes are also looking sort of smaller than normal.

On the other hand he's eating and drinking and he's interacting with the other budgie that's in the same cage.

I've turned the heating up in case he's cold (it has been very cold here especially at night) but the other bird appears fine. They are both males and get on really well. They sit together all the time, talk to each other and groom each other. All this is still happening and other than the being puffed up and his eyes he's behaving normally so I don't know what's wrong.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like the beginning of illness, what are his poops like?

A bit difficult to tell as there's 2 of them but there looks like there's some that may be very slightly runnier than others, but only very slightly.

I agree with Lin, on it could definetely be the start of something. Have you notice the other 2 birds picking on him at all? Since you said they were pretty bonded to each other.

There's only the 2 and they are still friendly and no change at all in their behaviour towards each other.

Sitting Fluffed up and sleeping a lot more is a sign of sickness. You did good to turn up the heat. If you have a spare cage it might be an idea to move him to that and keep three sides covered. That why you can check the poops and any other odd behaviour. A bed lamp shining into the cage will give extra warmth as well. When they are sick they have to work harder to keep a normal temp which is why they sit fluffed up, giving him extra heat makes it so they can work of healing more. If he i still sitting fluffed and/or his poops get worse I would look into seeing your vet.

How is he going?

thanks for asking! No real change tbh.

He's still fluffed up but on the other hand he's eating and drinking. The other bird, who is younger, appeared to be giving him a bit of a talking to this morning and he was responding so, I don't know.

It has been quite cold here as I said and maybe he's just not handling the changes in temperature too well, what with central heating fluctuations and stuff.

If he carries on tho' I will take him to the vet.

Update: Yesterday was a really nice sunny day, cold outside but sunny so I pushed their cage next to the window directly in the sunshine. They absolutely loved it. The one that's appeared sick was flitting about from the bars to the perch and they were both making loads of noise. The 'possibly' sick one was no longer fluffed up either.

I think he's just been cold, poor boy. So I've turned the heating up, will continue to keep an eye on him but hopefully that's all it was!!!
