Helppppppppp!

:P I noticed a little chick in my blue budgies nesting box this morning and i was thinking YAY! but i just went outside and had a peek and the little one was belly up on its back flat out like a pancake, its crop was full but it has a purpleish bruising all down its back as if its passed away, i'm not 100% sure and just needed some reassurance before i removed it.

If it was alive it would be moving even slightly at a day old wouldn't it? and they don't just get bruising for the sake of having a bruise do they? and if i was looking closely id see its chest/tummy rise and fall with breathing wouldn't I? :)

I think i know in my heart its gone but i just need to really be sure, i havent had a dead chick before :P:P

Yes they move :) I think your going to have to pick him up. If he is still with us he will move and make a noise. If not he will be cold. I hated picked up the one I lost. Sorry to hear this Una.

Una go and pick him up. Hold him in one hand in the palm and with the other hold it over the top. Don't squash. The heat from you hands will give him some strength ..if still alive.

Don't worry straight away if he is cold.

:) I went out and picked him up... hope i never have to do that bit again... He was toasty warm as mum was sitting on him, but she had just trod all over him rubbing his little face all into the bottom of the box so it was covered in yuck, there is no movement and no noises at all, his little body was all twisted where mum had been knocking him about :P I think ive lost this little one :P

Oh Una, I hope he recovers, poor little mite. Let us know. Dawnie has revived chicks by popping in her bra for heat before

:P Lin im convinced now he has gone, the bruising down his back is not a good thing, the blood has pooled in the areas that he was laying on.. and NO movement what so ever :P

He is now not keeping heat and has gone stiff. id say hes passed over for sure now.. Its so horrible when you are just not sure and dont want to risk removing it "just incase" although you know its gone :P

Ciao lil budgie dude :D:)

Oh, how awful Una, rest in peace little one.

I'm sorry to hear this Una. (((hugs)))

Hug Una Are there more eggs still? Keep an eye on this box then incase it's mum sitting too tightly on them. I ope you don't have to do that again either it's not a nice feeling at all.

I know how you feel, I cannot bear to touch a dead bird, let alone a baby chick. I leave it for my partner to do. I am hopeless. It must have been heart -wrenching for you. Hopefully there will be more chicks to come. I have 3 tiny little chicks at the moment with another one due tomorrow. Their mother ate her first 3 eggs and that was distressing enough for me!!

Good luck

Jenene :blink::) :angel1: :angel1: :angel1:

Una go down to the pet store tomorrow and get a "large" Budgie egg and place it with the other eggs. What can happen is a hen sits too tight on the eggs and chicks and can cause what happened to your chick. The large egg stops the hen sitting too tight and the chicks get a chance to live.

I know how you feel. I lost one the day before we moved in similar circumstances and felt and acted exactly as you did. It's heartwrenching and so very, very sad that something that tiny didnt get it's chance in life. You did all that you could. Watch out for the others. I have had another 4 successful ones out of the same hatching since mine died too. So there is hope :angel1:

Hugs Una, you have received some great advice.

RIP little guy

Sorry for your loss. Please keep us posted on how things go with your other eggs and chicks.

(((hugs)))ow poooooooor you :(:( little chick

I know how you feel Una, this happened to me as well. I've bred my budgies just once and they've had 6 eggs. The first two I found dead and squashed. It wasn't easy for me to pick them up :(

:( Daz is there anything else i can use instead? I don't have a pet store close, well the closest is 900ks away :D She has 4 or 5 more eggs left yet to hatch (gosh i cant even remember with the shock of loosing my little one :) ) ...

Thank you for the help and kind words, i feel horrible and i'm almost not game to go back out and check in the box although i know i should :( ..

Cheers

A marble will do the trick too Una, if you have one the right size

I just went scrounging through the girls bedrooms but was only able to find a few small marble's, I was wondering if there would be any difference in using a polished stone? I have a few that are roundish and a little bigger than a budgie egg but unsure if it would hold warmth any different?

Okay ive picked out 3 stones that i could possibly use, do you think one is better than the other or could i add a couple or should they be more round?

I have been outside and had a look.. she has 4 more eggs, and i have added the little stone thingys, I put in two to try and make more room and give any chicks a chance to survive under her.

I was worried the stones would scare her and put her off but i had them stashed down my bra for AGES before putting them in and when i checked in on her about 20 minutes later she was sitting on them all .. WHOOOT Im excited now and fingers crossed it will all be okay..
