March 1, 200619 yr :ausb: Hello everyone, Just a little tip here for any new budgies owners out there! If you want your budgie to be tame then I would advise to not have a mirror in its cage. This distracts their attentions as they think there is another budgie in their cage... and there isn't A mirror is not necessary because there are many other toys that can keep your budgie(s) amused! :(Laughing out loud): My Billy has never seen a mirror in his life and he is the most tame and playful budgie I have ever met! Toys like balls, olymipic rings, swings and bells really keep him entertained and he literally could play all day if he didn't get tired! :bluebudgie: Just a little tip there.... Emma and Billy xxxx xxxx I would really like to buy Paulie some more toys, but I cannot seem to find them anywhere! Where do you get them?
April 2, 200619 yr i must be lucky with our charlie,he`s had a mirror from day 1 and still loves to come out and play, only trouble he`s started biting but some ones told me how to help stop him. he loves to talk himself in the big mirror over the fire sat on my hand, after a couple of minuites he seems to get bored of it. How were you told you can stop your budgie biting?

How were you told you can stop your budgie biting? I was told to take out all her mirrors,so I did but that didn't stop her.I think she is just very protective of her cage. She does like to play with me but she includes the biteing and rather hard I might add.Doesn't draw blood or anything but I do get some nasty blood blisters! Ouch! :yelling:
June 12, 200618 yr I have a mirror in my cage and they both play with it. Cloud literally took the bell off the mirror and he gets his beak on the ring and bangs the dang mirror in the cage! Since they have each other, they don't spend a lot of time chirruping or attacking an imagined foe with the mirror. I think it's good to have when you're not there to keep them occupied. The climbing toys and swings keep them occupied as well as the whiffle ball too which they like to bang to their hearts content. I don't know if it's because my birds are young or having observed their play style. I guess each bird is different. That's the neat thing about budgies, they are very diverse "personality-wise." (Laughing out loud)
July 9, 200618 yr taken Leo's mirror out this morning, he is already so so active compared before, and really really is getting vocal as well :ausb: :bluebudgie:
July 9, 200618 yr Stitch doesn't have a mirror in his cage but ever since he discovered our bathroom mirror he flies in there to talk to himself constantly. If we cover that mirror he finds his reflection in almost anything, windows, saucepans, glasses (both drinking and seeing). Even the little shiny silver latch on my laptop was subject to his affection which would be great if I needed a laptop security device .... I'm not sure if this is 'fixable' I'm hoping it's a phase he'll grow out of .. but any opinions or advice would be appreciated :bluebudgie:
July 9, 200618 yr its okay as he bonds more with you, it is natural for them to do that Merlin does as long as it is not a permanent fixture in his cage :bluebudgie:
July 22, 200618 yr Moon had two mirrors in her cage and she was very protective of both of them. I took them out and she still bites. I have her on my shoulder right now. I think she likes me but dosnt like my hands... Edited July 22, 200618 yr by Kristina
September 11, 200618 yr Hi Paulie's Babie I buy my toys on the internet from Smart Bird Toys in Alabama USA. I buy quite a few at a time and let him have a new on when I think he is tired of his other toys. It takes my little budgie months to get used to a new toy and then, all of a sudden, he is crazy about it! I buy the smaller toys so he is not intimidated by them too much. Lukie is a very nervous bird but is getting better as time goes on. He is loved so much and is very pampered! I find it hard to find good toys in the UK and they are very expensive if you do find a good one. I find it far cheaper to get his toys from America. There are other good sites that you can try as well. Google in 'budgie toys' and you will soon find a few really good sites in USA. The next thing I am planning to buy is a DVD especially for parrots which Lukie might like. They also have Bird Sitter DVD's which might be enjoyable for a bugie - I will have to try one of these DVD's out and then I will let everyone know what Lukie thought of them. ( I told you he is pampered!!) Hope I have helped you. Luv Vonn Hello everyone, Just a little tip here for any new budgies owners out there! September 12, 200618 yr :hap: I got my sweet little Buddy as a rescue and was told he likes mirrors a whole lot so let him keep them. He still gets on my shoulder (as he is right now helping me type this) and loves to spend his out of cage time on the back of my couch when I am sitting there, bobbing his head, warbling and singing. Perhaps he would be tamer without mirrors but he is a fine little man, will step up when I want him to and gets back in his cage readily so I could never deprive him of his mirrors, he is tame and sweet enough for me. However, for a new bird owner, this is probably a very good idea. Like everything, depends on the bird as they are so very different. :hap:
September 12, 200618 yr I'll take your word for it :hap: My girl Citris got on her swing today and started swinging up-side down. But I have never heard about the mirror thing til now. My boy Shaddow seems to get mad when he sees Citris eating and goes to his mirror and stands there pecking and screaming at it. :hap: Shell

October 14, 200618 yr I agree, it would probably be better if you didn't have a mirror:P Ruby sometimes likes peck at his mirror :dbb1: and sometimes starts talking to it/his reflection... At night Ruby likes to sleep on his mirror?? :ausb: Here he is in the yellow Edited October 14, 200618 yr by rageruner
October 30, 200618 yr Do use a mirror if you want a tame budgie...... That's actually how i tamed my budgies (Wattle & Gumnut) once outside the cage to stay on my finger. If i got them to jump on my finger, then take them over to the mirror (my wardrobe door's are mirrors) they'd just sit there all day (if my arms didn't get sore). The novelty's worn off a bit now for my budgie's, they'd rather me walk around my house with them on my finger! They haven't had a mirror in their cage for over a year now...but Gumnut still prefers to talk to the perch more than he likes talking to Wattle. :ausb: Edited October 30, 200618 yr by moonsdestiny
January 4, 200718 yr What if I've already had the mirror in there for a while and I took it out? Would that make her mad? Or help her rather bond with me?
January 4, 200718 yr It would be a good idea to take it out if you're taming her. If she's already bonded to it, make sure you spend lots of time to compensate. She will be upset at first but once you've established a bond with her, she'll feel better.
March 7, 200718 yr Hi I just read this topic and I am thinking about removing the mirrors out of my budgie cage. But I am still not sure about it. I got my budgie tamed already, as he was raised in an appartment and he was used to people, taking him in hands. Now he is 1.5 years old and he is still tame. The problem was, that I am working full time and even thouhg my budgie is not home alone the whole time (my mother is on retirement and she is at home), he is allowed to leave his cage in the morning and then lately in the evening, when I come home. My mom does not want to let him free while I am not at home, as she is worried that she might forget about him and open the window or so. So I bought him some toys and also a mirror (looks like a lantern) with the bell. He loved it and we finally ended with 6 mirrors with bells total in his cage. When he is inside, he jumps from one to another, he let the bell ring here and there and it ands with all the mirrors swinging. He seems to really enjoy every one of them. He still come to me, talk to me, tries to feed my fingers and does the head bobing thing while sitting on my fingers. Do you really think it would be good for him to take the mirrors off? I imagine that they kind of keep him company, while I am not at home and I do not want to make him sad..... :budgiedance:
March 7, 200718 yr Actually i always feared using mirrors with my birds thinking that i wouldn't be able to tame them. But Opal seems to be an exception. She loves her mirror but she learned to be tame just the same. She comes when called (mostly) and is finger tame and copies whistles, I think maybe the mirror problem is more pronounced in males and not in females.
March 11, 200718 yr Bobby has his silver Xmas Bauble still up! we can't take it away cos he loves it........he runs round it and pushes it, great interactive fun in fact he loves it even more if you play with it with him
March 12, 200718 yr If you don't have any behavior or territorial problems do what you feel is best for your budgie. We all have different ideas just like wing clipping but I believe each home and bird is different and must be treated as such.
September 13, 200717 yr Must add my views to this, I've heard too about not giving budgies mirrors but Percy has had several since day one, two inside his cage and two outside and he talks extremely well.... in fact too much at times (Laughing out loud). Had no problem taming him either and he LOVES coming over to me... never leaves me alone in fact... so I must say I can't agree about not giving them mirrors... I think best to try first and see how you go and at least if it's just a bird alone, he will have "company" and be able to see his own kind (viz his reflection). Chrissie
