Suspected Feather Cyst

Has anyone had experience with lumps or cysts?

My nana's budgie Beauty appears to have a cyst on one of her main feathers, its basically on the top 'corner' of her wing. Its a round, oval shape about the size of a baked bean and is a mixture of yellow, peach and pink in colour. It looks like it has burst a little bit because although it is hard and dry all over part of it looks like it has opened and the outside rim is a brown colour whereas the inside is yellowy.

Since having this lump shes been totally fine in herself, eaing, drinking, chirping, pooping, everything even though the lump looks quite painful it doesn't seem to affect her.

I'm in the process of looking for an avian vet although I'm not sure if my nana will be able to pay for it, being a pensioner, but we'll work something out.

I saw on the program Zoo Vet At Large where a budgie had a cyst on its wing and had to have an operation to remove it, the bird died during the op but it was quite a large lump and ended up being two separate lumps. Has anyone had experience with lumps or cysts like this?

I haven't heard of them on the wings, but that does sound like a fatty tumour. And since it has erupted it will need to be seen by a vet to get treatment for infection. Operations are tricky with budgies.

There is a picture on here of someones budie with one on the belly.

Does it look like that at all?

Thanks for your reply :P

Awww poor bird, its not as big as that one but its a similar colour. Here I've added some photos to my photobucket, click on 'Budgie lump'

Not the best quality but you get the idea.

:P Can't see the photo, just Photobuckets home page, there is a post under Budgie Pictures to show you how to do this properly, I goofed up in the beginning as well. :P

i dont think it is a lipoma. lipomas (fatty tumours) usually will happen on the abdomen of the budgie or on the chest.

feather cysts are basically a lot like blisters on humans, canaries are particularly prone to get them on their wings. the cysts are caused by a build up of bacteria in the feather follicle and it will be infected.

the budgie will probably need an op to remove it. as far as i know it is a simple procedure and lots of birds do recover from having them. then the budgie will need a course of antibiotics to stop it going septic.

good luck finding an avian vet, what area are you in, maybe someone can help you.

:D

Here some links instead, not sure why it won't work for you. Better to post urls then you can see the full picture, plus I'm too lazy to down-size them! (right-click and 'open in a new window')

I also found this website: http://www.whyallavet.com.au/Patients/budgie.html

which is reassuring :D Beauty's lump looks smaller than that one too, but almost in the same place.

I'm in Tyne and Wear in the UK, my Nana lives in Sunderland but of course we'll be willing to travel. Would Beauty be able to cope with travelling then the possibility of an operation in one day?

oh yeah, looks like a cyst. should be fairly simple to remove. i had a budgie with a lump on his chest and my vet could not remove it, but she explained to me how on the wing they are fairly common and are easier to remove.

unfortunately there are no registered avian vets in tyne & wear or in durham. the nearest i could find were these:

Northumberland

D. G. Rollo, 3-4 The Chandlery, Quayside, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland TD15 1HE Tel. (01289) 330500

Cleveland

Wilton House Vet Clinic, Wilton House, Guisborough, Cleveland. TS14 6JA

Tel. (01287) 637470

i have no idea how far these are away from you, but i'm guessing they are a fair distance.

if you or your nana cant get there, try looking on yell.com for vets and phone around for someone who is good with birds.

budgies usually travel fairly well. take the smallest spare cage you have take everything out except a perch so nothing bumps around on the journey and cover the cage with a dark sheet for the entire trip.

hope that helps, keep us posted on how she gets on

:D Nasty little cyst there, can see it now, they might "collar" your bird (like dogs and cats) for a few days after to prevent ripping out the stiches or picking at it. Good Luck!! :D

Thanks very much. Those vets are a bit far away but I went on the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons website which lists vets places and you can specifiy ones that treat birds. I'm going to call up two in Sunderland and I'm also visiting my own vet next week about my rabbit so I'll be asking him if he can recommend anyone.

I saw the collar on the post pixie gave me up there, looks very sweet and effective so if Beauty needs one of them she should be okay with it

oh good, best of luck x

I emailed a vets in my nana's area explaining I think my budgie may need a surgical procedure to remove a cyst on her wing and asked if their practice has the equipment and skilled vets to do it. They said "Yes we have done this before" and "2 vets share a great interest in birds", giving the name of the vets so all we'll have to do is make an appointment and see what they think! I thought we'd have to drive miles away and I was worried how Beauty would take it but that may not be necessary now :(

:ausb: That's great that they have done this sort of thing before. :budgiedance:

  • 2 weeks later...

We're taking Beauty to the vets tomorrow or the next day. Its my regular vets, I asked a vet there if they would be able to remove a lump from my budgies wing, if they had the equipment and vets and if they'd done it before and he said yes to it all. Apparently they've removed lumps from budgies, cockatiels and done operations on a varitety/number of birds. The vet did say he was aware of the risk with budgies but its been quite successful at their practice.

We're going for a consultation first to see if its a good idea to take the lump off taking into account her age, health, well-being, whether us and the vet think its necessary and how much my Nana has in her bank account! If a lack of money holds her back though I'm going to offer her some because I know how much she cares for her little bird!

So everything should be all right! Just have to wait and see :) Now to find a dark sheet like Pixie25 said to put over her cage for the journey!

Hi all :)

We took my Nana's budgie Beauty to the vets today, we had specifically asked for one with an interest in birds. The vet was lovely, she was very interested in Beauty's lump and said it looked like a sort of spot with cheesy stuff inside! She got a scalpel and cut it open, Beauty didn't flinch or make a sound she was just chirping quietly all the way through. To me it didn't look like it was skin over the top of it or anything, which was probably why it seemed Beauty couldn't feel it. The vet scooped out the cheesey stuff with a few cotton buds then put some stuff on it to help it heal, some other stuff to keep it clean (sorry can't remember names!) and then she cauterised it slightly as it bled a little bit on the cotton bud, then she was finished!

Beauty was totally fine with it :hap: The vet said it may come back again but if Beauty wasn't that bothered and it doesn't seem to be hurting her or harming her quality of life then we're pleased about that!

I took some photos on my phone which I've added to my photobucket. Its not blood on her wing its the stuff to help it heal or keep it clean :fear

:fear Glad all went well! From your description of the cheesy stuff, it sounds like a sebaceous cyst, I had one removed from my scalp once which required stitches. :)
