Some Questions

Hello, I just bought a budgie yesterday and I have some questions.

1). How do you tell if its a guy/girl?

2). How long will it take them to be more comfortable with their surroundings? He seems to be scared and isn't really moving in his cage.

3). Whats the deal with the mirror?

4). What fruit should I give him?

1). How do you tell if its a guy/girl? When they are young, they have bars all the way to their cere, a male budgie will have a smooth pink cere while a female will have a pale blue one with white rings. It is hard to tell sometimes. Have a look on eterri's site (budgietalk) I think she had a section that shows the difference.

2). How long will it take them to be more comfortable with their surroundings? He seems to be scared and isn't really moving in his cage. this can depend on the bird, some only take a day others up to four or a week. Just don't make sudden moves around the cage and keep up the talk, or if you not there leave a radio on. Silence equals danger.

3). Whats the deal with the mirror? A mirror in the cage is another bird to the budgie and they bond very quickly to that other one and not to you. A mirror is a personal choice and it depends on what you where after with this feathers family member. If you want one happy to be with you and possible talk then a mirror isn't a good idea.

4). What fruit should I give him? apple, pear, grapes are all good, jut be sure not to give them any of the seeds. Also veggies are better for them since fruit has a lot of sugar in it. Lettuce, carrot, sprouts, broccoli and corn. Just remember it take a long while for them to try any of this so keep it to a small amount to start with.

I just gave him some apple and he jumped on it right away. He thought it was more of a toy but once he bit into it he decided to eat some more but than he just decided to stand on it and look at us. I guess I will remove the mirror. But whats bothering me is that he seems to have a diarrhea but it might be just because hes in a new surrounding.

That's great he might have been introduced to fruit before you got him.

Stress of moving can bring on some diarrhoea in budgies just keep an eye on it and if it gets worse or last longer than a few days or gets stuck to his vent try and get him seen by a vet, many do a bird check up with all new budgie they buy just as a precaution.

It is kinda getting stuck to his vent and when someone gets near him he moves to the other side of the cage.

Getting stuck to his vent is usually a sign of a problem. Try to get him to an avian vet. It could be nothing but stress, but if he was mine I'd get him checked
