Posted March 11, 200619 yr As some of you know when I got Sunny Boy from the breeder he did a really severe wing clip on one side. Only One of Sunny's fligh feather has recently grown back and he tried to fly tonight and crash landed and broke it. I could not stop the bleeding so we had to rush him to the Emergency vet... The vet pulled the feather and used styptic powder to stop the bleeding and sent us on our way. We are home again and Sunny is munching on some millet and looks like he is okay. Should I be watching him for shock or anything like that? The vet said just take him home and let him rest. I am a nervous wreck right now, I know I probably won't sleep much for fear that something will happen to him. Some advice please.
March 11, 200619 yr :hap: Oh i can imagine how you are feeling, id say just keep him fairly quiet and even cover him so he can rest. About a month ago, my husband stood on Apples tail feathers plucking 12 of them out.. I thought my world had fallen apart, of course Apple was fine and i did enough worry for us both to last a lifetime. I just kept an eye on Apple and made sure he didn't get stressed by anything, I also gave him some Probiotic to help him recover since the poor little mite had suffered some blood loss. I hope and i'm sure your little one will be okay, just make sure you keep us posted on how he is doing. Cheers  Una
March 11, 200619 yr Thank you for replying Una. Can you tell me where I can purchase Probiotic , what is it and how do you give it to your birds? I am willing to go out and buy anything right now as long as it will help my little friend.
March 11, 200619 yr Sorry for the late reply (i went for a drive) Umm Probiotic is a concentrated water soluble blend of live microbes which benefits the animal by improving the intestinal balance.. this might sound weird to give to your bird at a time like this but it can be used in periods of extreme stress eg: overcrowding, diarrhoea, temperature extremes, transportation, training, medication and following surgery. It is NOT to be used with antibiotics but can be used immediately following antibiotic treatment. I bought mine online from an online pet produce store but you should be able to purchase it at most good pet stores i'm sure, the container should give full directions on dosage rates etc... It can be used daily as a boost for their digestive systems to help keep them healthy, its water soluble so you make it up and give fresh daily :hap: Hope this helps you Cheers  Una Edited March 11, 200619 yr by una
March 11, 200619 yr good thinking getting him to the vet ASAP, keep us updated. Poor fellow, glad he was feeling better after the event.
March 11, 200619 yr It is NOT to be used with antibiotics but can be used immediately following antibiotic treatment. Hiya, why can you not use probiotics with antibiotics? I was told by the vet to give Cheeky both at the same time. Hope sunny boy is doing okay now! thanks ali Edited March 11, 200619 yr by Cheeky
March 11, 200619 yr Thanks guys for your words of support and concern. Sunny Boy seems to be doing well this morning, he is eating and chirping away. His wing looks awful though because it is stained with a big patch of dried blood. I am still keeping a close eye on him but I think he is going to be fine. Thanks everyone.
March 11, 200619 yr I was just reading about another member with a budgie that has had many broken blood feathers and I was wondering if there is anything that a vet can do to help. I have a feeling that if only one feather grows in again that the same thing will keep happening. Can a vet pull a few of the clipped feathers to promote new growth? Just enough of the feathers so that the new ones will be protected and not as fragile and prone to breaking... or will this be too traumatic for my bird. I don't want him to go through what we went through last night again. I am very concerned about Sunny Boy and just want to do what is best for him. I really wish the breeder didn't touch his wing at all :hap:
