i need your brains as mine are on strike

how long should newly bought budgies (sunshine and freddy) be kept in the cage before they are let out to fly around the room?, and is it okay for siblings to be kept together (brother and sister)?

many thanks jason

ps, the kids named the budgies (Laughing out loud)

Yes it is okay for siblings to be together of opposite sexes

As for letting them out do you want them tamed first? If so that is the first step, finger taming, working them them to trust you and creating a bond.

When you first let them out they will probably go wild, may bump into a wall or window. So make sure your shades are down or blinds are slightly drawn, and I would start in a smaller room to let them out so they don't hurt themselves.

Are they clipped? Not that you need to but that is something to take into consideration because if they are not tamed before you let them out they will go to the highest place for safety. If they are, they can still get lift but won't go as high until flight feathers start to come back in.

Are you planning on taming them? If so, then wait until they step up on command, as it makes it easier and less stressful returning them to the cage.

Did you get both the birds at the same time? If you did, then there is no need for quarantine. And they won't breed without a breeding box (unless you are Phoebe!), so they can be housed together. I have a brother and sister housed together, and, as long as the boy does exactly what he is told, it is a reasonably peaceful arrangement :hap:

thank you for the very quick reply

i shall try the step command route first and then let them out

how long does it take to get the basic step command going or is it a how long is a piece of string question?

Yep, as long as a piece of string! :(Laughing out loud): Some people seem to have immense success, and others, like me, are still struggling with it years later! :hap: I got a tiel on Saturday, and by Sunday she was stepping up, but I have yet to get a budgie to do anything I ask, beg or bribe them to :P

Lin is right it really depends on the individual bird, if you find that they are being very timid together you may want to have separate taming sessions.

thank you all for the answers ill keep the stepping going

thank you again jason
