Posted March 8, 200619 yr Hi folks! I have received some input on Buddie....the consensus seems to be that she is a girl! I have some questions for all of you who are much more knowledgeable than I. I'm a little scared now that she is female as I've heard some stories from people who's females have laid eggs without a male to fertilize them. One gal said her budgie did this and died shortly after. So here goes.....Will she start to make a nest even tho she has no male around? If she does can I help her through this even though she won't lay eggs. Should I give her materials for this? What age will she go though this? Will her mood change? And....Will she still learn to talk? She has learned "the whistle" and I'm sure she's trying the "pretty bird" but from what I've read females don't speak very much. She's a sweetie and if she needs me to help her along through anything she may go through I'd like to be prepared.....even though she likes to poop on my keyboard...(Laughing out loud). Thanks so much!

She's a sweetie and if she needs me to help her along through anything she may go through I'd like to be prepared.....even though she likes to poop on my keyboard...(Laughing out loud). :hap: Thanks so much! okay, I don't much about the egg laying. I would think if she was introduced to a male budgie, as long as NO nesting box is introduced she will not lay (yes there are expection). She shouldn't make a nest, budgies in the wild use hollow trees, you may see her chew more and rip alot because the female do the chewing to make the perfect spot to lay the eggs. No I don't believe her mood will change, she may become hormonal (males do to) and you can do things to avoid or decrease it like adjusting the tempature, her daylight hours etc... Yes, I heard the females are just as likely to talk - with any budgie you have to work them daily if you want them to learn different words. Many budgie talk that are females, and many males don't talk. I believe it is up to the bird, though they do say that males are more likely. I believe people say this because males tend to vocalize more then females. I hope that answers your questions.
March 8, 200619 yr Thanks for the info....you have helped greatly! Even without a male she will go into the "breeding condition"? At what age should this occur? I spend as much time as possible with her....I'm constantly saying phrases and I was finally rewarded with "the whistle" several weeks ago...! I was so excited you'd have thought I won a million dollars or something....(Laughing out loud). I'm sure I am hearing the "pretty bird" intonation but no actual words yet....of course I wouldn't know what it should sound like....but I'm pretty persistant. (Laughing out loud)
March 8, 200619 yr When her cere starts to turn dark brown (though I have heard sometimes it doesn't happen), I believe around 6-8 months. That is how Pretty is he picks up the whistles, I swear I hear Pretty bird but them who knows :hap:
