i haven't a clue but...

So all of my fids like strongly flavored foods(don't blame them ever tasted pellets... pretty bland) so i was making carrot birdy biscuts, and dumped a bit of fresh ground pepper corns in there... now are pepper corns okay for them? i didn't really think about it before i did it, biscuts are in the oven... should i feed them to the dogs (if they'll eat em) or do the fiddlets get a new treat? :(

:ausb: Aren't peppercorns too much for them to handle, like they have no nutritive value being a spice and all and I know people that avoid pepper as it upsets their stomachs. :grbud:

:ausb: Don't think they are for the dogs either, consider this a bad cooking experience. (I had one about a couple of months ago when I was making homemade turkey soup.........didn't get any in the end). Oh, and the second batch of peanut butter cookies a couple of weeks ago, you get the picture. :grbud:

The budgie's intestine is a pretty fragile thing. I would skip the pepper if I were you.

a lot of parrots like spicy things. you can buy spicy power treats and things for parrots that like things hot. i think it is because parrots have much less taste buds than we humans have. :)

i would say keep away from ground pepper (although i doubt a pinch would hurt), most of the spicy bird products i have seen use chilies or chili extract. you can also make birdie bread and add any veggies or safe herbs you like.

how do you make birdie bread?? my budgie goes nuts for our bread but I guess its probably not very good for him!

i have a recipe somewhere... ah, here it is :P

Birdie Bread

1 cup whole wheat flour

1 cup yellow corn meal

2 tsp baking powder

3/4 tsp salt

1/2 tsp baking soda

1 tbsp sugar

2 eggs with shells

3 tbsp oil

1 cup buttermilk

Grease an 8" pan. Mix dry ingredients. Wash eggs then pulverize in blender. Mix in oil and buttermilk, then mix in dry ingredients. Bake for 30 minutes @ 350 degrees. Cool and cut into small squares and freeze.

Variations: Fruits, veggies, peppers, nuts, etc. can be added to the mixture if you like. (I added 100% bran cereal, flax seeds and raisins).

i have never tried this recipe myself but was recommended it by someone else. :(

brilliant thanks. ill need to give that a try im sure he'll love it.

I just purchased a bird recipe book yesterday. There are a lot of different types of birdie breads, i will post some other ones tonight. (i posted a few snacks earlier today. some are more for bigger birds, but if you make the portions smalled, budgies would love them too!)
