Posted March 5, 200619 yr okay i have a gret/green male skyblue greywing female a yellow/green diluted clearwing female a baby grey..(which is WAY to young to breed..but didnt wanna leave her out) what do i need in a mate and with who to get some recessive and dominate pieds... (i think thats what i'm looking for .....i love the rainbows of pastel and the multi coloured...i knoow i'm not using proper terms here but i dont know what they are called...)
March 5, 200619 yr To get dominant pieds you would need to get one and mate it with one of your birds - then you could get 50% dominant pieds. You won't get any recessive pieds unless one of your birds is split for recessive pied. It would be split for recessive pied if one of its parent's (grandparents, etc.) was a recessive pied and it inherited the gene. If you had one like that you could get recessive pieds by breeding it with a recessive pied.. or another bird that was split for recessive pied.
March 5, 200619 yr I'm confused. I thought you were going into rescue? Not trying to be snarky here, just genuinely confused.
March 6, 200619 yr :ausb: Me too, like why would you care about breeding going into the rescue business, that's sort of a contradication, i.e. rescues concentrate on spey/neuter, etc. and don't promote procreating, we already have enough little critters? :grbud:
March 6, 200619 yr wow!! it was just a question....just trying to learn more i'm not breeding i dont know how to breed these animals and yes i have a rescue but am i not allowed PETS?....i know what a rescue is all about....wow jumpy bunch here...
March 6, 200619 yr :ausb: That's good, I don't care about what my budgies are, sorry, you will have fun with all your new space. :grbud:
March 6, 200619 yr A question with a question :ausb: I was kinda thinking the same thing when I read your post (not in a bad way or anything) but when you come across rescues being a bird, dogs, cats etc...they are very much against breeding because that is why they are in the rescue busines. :grbud: No need to breed if there are so many to be rescued yeah know. So the way your question was stated, it sounded like you wanted to breed to produce different color budgies. Instead of stating, I am not looking to breed but to learn more about mutations. Anyways no harm done in asking questions, I have been following most of the mutation questions around, I think it is awesome to learn what produces what colors. It really interested me but then at time totally confuses me too. OFF TOPIC: when are you moving on to your new land so exciting. Edited March 6, 200619 yr by lovey
March 6, 200619 yr Alright....to rephrase my question....JUST to learn about mutations why would i need(in theory) as mates to my birds to produce recessive and dominate.....I love the pastel colouring and the multi colouring and am wondering how they are produced.... lovey, I move to the new land MAY 3.... March 6, 200619 yr wow!! it was just a question....just trying to learn more i'm not breeding i dont know how to breed these animals and yes i have a rescue but am i not allowed PETS?....i know what a rescue is all about....wow jumpy bunch here... No one is being jumpy, just confused about the situation. It sounded like you wanted to breed as you asked what you needed to get certain mutations and even mentioned that one of your birds isn't old enough to breed yet. So yeah. Maybe just a misunderstanding? Everyone is entitled to pets. It's just that most people who rescue are against breeding because it takes up space that could have been occupied by rescue animals. They usually see their rescues (the ones they decide to permanently adopt) as pets.
March 6, 200619 yr If I am wrong I will be correct but how I understand to get dilutes, recessive pieds are recessive genes, so you need two of the same parent that carry the recessive gene. Blue is a recessive gene, so if you breed a 2 blue budgies, then you will get 2 blue budgies (this is if the two birds don't have any hidden genes) So to get dilutes you need to breed to dilutes or a bird that is split for the dilute gene. Following me? To start learning, I followed around the mutation posts, I found a site that has information on mutations so I could use that as a guide. I use http://www.geocities.com/budgie-place/p_colors.html to assist me and then of course the great help of Nerwen, Hurdy and Rainbow here an anyelse who jumps in (Laughing out loud). OFF TOPIC, you will have to post pictures. Edited March 6, 200619 yr by lovey
March 6, 200619 yr okay, kinda following here, my other qustion would be....I dont know what the parents or grandparents are of any of the budgies...so by the colours i have what would your best guess be on the mutations of the parents and g.parents?
March 6, 200619 yr The birds you already have carry the mutations you can see. They also have some that are hidden to you because you have not bred any of them. Different mutations are carried on different genes. There are basically 3 kinds. Sex linked, recessive and dominant. To get Dominant, you will need at least one parent showing (visually showing the mutation) such is the case for the dominant or australian pied. Recessive mutations can be carried by either recessive or dominant mutations. For example, I had on recessive pied bird (danish pied) that was born from two recessive blue birds (light blue dad and cobalt mother). The blue birds were visually blue but (one of them at least) carried also the recessive austalian pied (blue/pied). Recessive mutations cannot carry dominant mutation because the dominant mutation dominates. Sex link mutations are carried on an another set of chromosomes and since, contrary to humans it is the female who carries the XY and the male the XX, so female birds of sex link mutation cannot be split for a sex link mutation because of the short Y. Correct me if I am wrong?
