Posted March 4, 200619 yr I have two very well rounded boys, Binks and Bailey. Their cage is easy enough to move around, so they travle from my room to the living room, and sometimes out on out back porch. I live in Florida, and the weather is perfict right now! I have an over hang, so its shaded, and they like to tweet and listen to wild birds and see and hear new things. My mom recomended they be put in the sun for a few minutes, so I put the cage in a spot that was half in, half out of the light. they sat in the sun (not direct sun, I have a screen that blocks some of it) I sat with them for the five or so minutes they were there, and when I got a little warm we came in. Is a little sun once a week or so benificial to their health?
March 4, 200619 yr yes it is very benefical, I usually put Pretty by the window when the sunlight is coming through indirectly.
March 4, 200619 yr Unfiltered sunlight helps in producing vitamin D3 which is beneficial to them (especially if they aren't on a pelleted diet). Unfiltered means actually being out there though, not behind a window. Even a screen filters the light too much for it to be very helpful. I'm sure they enjoy the light anyway but taking their cage out into unfiltered light is a great idea. Just make sure that you're right there with them at *all* times when they are outside. It is too easy for an accident to happen and the birds to get away or be bothered by other animals or people. Edited March 4, 200619 yr by eterri
March 4, 200619 yr yes natural sunlight is very good for them. (this means not through a window though, that wont have any benefit as part of the light spectrum is filtered out). i have an avian lamp in my bird' room too and leave it on a couple of hours a day. that will provide full spectrum light for them. it wasnt very expensive the lamp cost £10 and the control box was £20. the bulbs need replacing annually, but it is very handy when it is cold and the nights get longer.
March 5, 200619 yr I didnt mean filtered sun really, its pool cage screen. I bring the entire cage outside on the deck. Is this still filtered of all the benificial things? I meant its not the suns full blast, because there is a screen, but the same light still gets through the holes. ??
March 5, 200619 yr I believe what the girls are trying to say is that the birds DO need direct sun light, that even thru a screen its still being filtered to much, It wont harm them in small doses thru through out the day...
