Injection For Mites!

Could I just ask please if anyone's bird has had the injection for mites and did your bird have a bad reaction to it.

Pluck has just had has 2nd injection on friday and he was realy off fri evening and by sat tea time he was worring me like mad he was not eating not whistling his daft Benny Hill tune and all he wanted to do was sleep, so I took him back to the vet and she gave him a antibiotic injection we just let him sleep sat night and by monday morning he was cheerfull Pluck again.

However he is having his 3rd and final one this friday it is worrying me as I dont want a weekend of a sick bird again...1st injection he was a bit off but okay that was given in his neck the 2nd was in his tummy do you think it matters where they inject them...Linda

im sorry i cant really help but i think they can have a side reaction and can get sleepy  but im not an expert well good luck  :angel1:  poor little pluck

my vet always gives me oral medication for my budgies. she never advised in favour of an injection. i suppose with injections you have to give a bigger dose all in one go, so it is more likely to have the adverse effects that you are talking about.

with regards to mites - budgies only ever need treating for mites if they actually have them, what mites does your budgies have? is your vet and avian vet?

personally I would call the vet if you are concerned, they know what they gave him and the side effects.

ditto

Have I posted in the wrong place again Pixie I thought I had to stick to off topic..oohh well??

It was a Ivomec injection...and yes the vet is a avian vet and I was a bit worried when I looked up the informomation on the injections...he is a tiel not a budgie and she said she thinks he has mites but I think he is a plucker and has been plucked he plucks then makes a dreadfull hurt noise it's awfull..Linda

I did caal them again sat night but she just gave him another injection..hmmm I am thinking of not going back there I dont get a right feeling about this..Linda

if it is a tiel you are talking about then yes, it does belong in offtopic, but you didnt say it was a tiel in your post so i presumed it would be a budgie, being a budgie forum and all. sorry for confusion.

My fault Pixie sorry..Linda

oh no probs, this topic is relevant to budgies too so i will leave this here for now.

did your vet take a sample by scratching the skin or anything? if your not comfortable with your vet i would seek a new one. it does seem odd to go for an injection when ivermectin can be given orally.

Or it can even just be applied directly to the skin between their wings as a one off treatment.

mmmm. i would phone the vet and tell them about the side effects and see what they say. then seek another vet if you have your doubts.

I've heard of a few cases where vets prefer to give it in the form of an injection but never unless the bird actually has a case of mites that needs treating. Mite treatment is essentially just a pesticide. Too much of it can be really bad for a bird. It's not like a vaccination which prevents a condition as it is purely to treat one that already exists.

I agree, let your vet know of your concerns. Also, if it were me, I'd give another avian vet a phonecall to get their opinion on the matter.

One of the most common causes of cockatiels plucking is actually a parasite called giardia. Your vet should run tests to see if this is what is causing the plucking. Sometimes it takes a few tests before it is caught. This might be why your vet decided on the ivermectin though I've never heard of this as treatment for giardia as it isn't the same as mites. Have a talk with your vet about testing for this condition.

Here's an article that talks about giardia: http://www.exoticpetvet.net/avian/giardia.html

Good luck, and don't be afraid to ask your vet questions. It's your right and they should respect this.

I'm no help, I've never had a shot done.

:D Monty had 2 injections for mites and weathered them well. His feet were sore so the vet gave me some tape to stretch around the perches temporarily so it would make it easier for him to grip. Everything went well, she says that one shot should do it but she always gives two for assurance. (guess it depends on the actual dosage).

let us know what happens, this is Pluck the one you got at the auction, I remember

If it was me, I would definately seek another vet. They can ring your current vet for the details of treatment, and ask them to discuss all treatment with you prior to giving it. If it sounds complex, ask for it in writing, say you'll come back, and come and ask the people on this board.

It really doesn't sound right, and I can't see that this is the primary cause of the plucking, so a heavy handed treatment of a minor ailment seems a bit of a risk

Yep I agree with what's been said and I just had a feeling that this was not right I am not going to let him have a 3rd injection tomorrow, it has made him ill for something I dont think he has, no skin test done or even looked at properly for mites so I was not happy after the 2nd visit ..it does not feel right and I could not bare to see him so ill again..I can hear him whistling his Benny Hill tune and laughing to himself... so he stays at home and I will try to find another vet..I dont think we have a avain vet in this area just ordinary vets..Linda

Im glad to hear your not getting the 3rd one done. and I'd love to hear the benny hill tune, (Laughing out loud)

I'm sure some English people can help you to find an avian vet. Can you be more specific about where you are, and someone will be able to point you in the right direction?

Yeah sure I am in Clitheroe...Lancashire

try some of these. :P

the last one i got from the harrison's webpage. it is listed as a stockist for harrisons pellets so yes they do see avian patients... whether they are certified avian vets well i wouldnt know. my advice is to try the other ones i listed because those ones i found on several parrot websites.

the most important thing is to find a vet you understand and trust. good luck x
