Deformed Claws

Featured Replies

I have a female Budgie around 1 year old, and she has developed severely deformed claws. I have them trimmed regularly and I have natural perches in the cage. (I also have a male in the same cage that does not suffer this condition.) Instead of her claws growing short and curling under as normal, they grow straight out and are white in colour and extremely thick, and they do not taper off to a point on the ends. They feed on trill seed with vegetables and they also use a calcium "bell" and a cuttlefish. Any ideas on what might be causing this??

Thank You, Kelly

Can you post a picture? Sounds like a problem this particular bird will have for life, but if you can post a picture we'll know better. When you get them trimmed at the vet, ask how to do it, and a good vet will let you do it under their supervision

One of my budgies has a straight toe nail but it doesn't affect her at all. Is it just one nail or all of them?
