I Think My Budgie Is Sick...

okay, so I wasn't going to say anything about my new budgie until I could get a picture of him. Remember the budgie that I wanted to get, the one that was hand-raised? Well I got him, I went to look at him and he looked healthy. He finished quaritine and now I have him with everybody else. One night he puked, and I didn't think anything of it, but that was a few days ago and now all he does is sit on a perch all fluffed up, so I'm guessing he's sick. There is no avain vet here, there might be one in Winnipeg, which is 2 1/2 hours away, but my parents won't take me :P There is a normal vet here, but they aren't very experienced with birds. I don't know what to do, I was hoping you guys could help me figure out what he has, and then get the medicine to treat it from the vet? His poop is normal except its a lighter color them my other birds poop, but could that just be because he's young? Oh, and he's about a month and a half old. One more thing, the home he came from smelled TERRIBLY of smoke.

:ausb: Think you better get him into the doc Meg, hopefully he can phone for backup. Good luck and I hope it isn't something serious. :P

He sounds extremely ill and I'm afraid to say that it's impossible for any of us to diagnose this. Budgie diseases/illnesses often come with very similar symptoms. Because of this, you can't just say "my budgie is fluffed, vomitting, listless, etc." and figure out what's wrong. Any number of things can cause those symptoms. Only proper testing (usually a gram's stain and other fecal tests) performed by an avian vet can accurately diagnose your budgie.

Furthremore, if you try and guess what's wrong and treat him with medications at random, you can just do more harm. For example, if you assume your bird has an infection and treat it with antibiotics you could actually worsen the condition. The medication has to be specific to the infection depending on whether it's bacterial, fungul, viral, etc. Antibiotics can kill bacteria but pave the way for fungus to freely grow so you'd need an antifungal medication, for example.

I know parents can be tough to deal with but budgies can live for quite a long time and you can't expect to never need an avian vet during their lifetimes. Call the nearest vet and see if they can at least refer you to someone closer. A lot of the time they'll know of avian vets that aren't listed online or in other places. I recently found out there was another one in the city where I normally take my birds to the vet so you never know.

In the meantime, keep the budgie isolated from the others and keep him warm. He's puffing because he has a chill and is trying to get warmer. If you have a heating pad, put it on low, put a towel on top of it and then place the cage on top of that.

Good luck, and keep us updated please.

Meg I can understand your situation. It is unfortunate that your parents wont take you to the avian vet. Can you get some Apple Cider Vinegar and is he drinking? If yes to both, mix 1ml of Vinegar to 100ml of water. thats is 1/2 teaspoon in one cup of water. this will assist in cleaning his crop. As eterri said, we do not know what is wrong with him and so can't suggest medication. This is not medication and may not help but it worth a try if you can't convince your parents to take him to the vet.

Also keep him warm, no fruit or vegitables. Seed base only Millet is fine. It's a treat for him. Replace the water Vinegar mixture each morning.

We will cross our fingurs for you.

keep us updated, you received excellent advice above.

okay, well he's getting worse, he is also puffed up, and this evening he puked all over the place, it was covering his face, tail and the sheet covering the cage. I've asked my parents over and over again if they would please take me to Winnipeg to get him to an avain vet, I even said I would pay for gas and the vet bill and everything, but they won't. I used this search function:

http://www.aav.org/vet-lookup/locate-vet2....string=Winnipeg

And I found two avain vets. Here are the websites to where they work-

http://www.winrosevet.com/

http://www.centennialanimalhospital.com/

Should I phone them? Do you think they would be able to help me?

:P Don't think they will give you advice over the phone. Do talk to your parents again and tell them how this is so important it is to you and how you are being a responsible pet owner. All the best.
:P I guess I am thinking about my parents now (as I was as old as you when all this was happening). Guess they have their reasons for not taking you to the vet so all you can do is abide by their decision after you have provided all the facts. And we shall hope your budgie will regain it's health.

If it isn't possible for you to take your bird to the avian vet maybe the vet nearby could call them and ask for advice. When I went to the vet with my bird last week they had me give him gatorade (pedialyte works as well). Make sure to keep him nice and warm, good luck

oh this is so sad  talk to your parents again. if you were sick they would take you to a doctor, so it should be the same for your budgie as he is your friend and a part of the family. your parents are acting very irresponsibly here, not you. you must keep talking to them about it, if it were me i would tell them i would make my own way there by bus or train and walk and ask them for one good reason why they refuse to help? it cant be the money, if you have offered to pay... what is it that they cant be bothered?

can you make your own way there to a local vet? as celeste said, the small animal vet will be able to phone the avian vet for advice, second opinion etc.

Please, even ask your parents to come on here and see the advice you have been given. They are welcome to ask any questions they like, we will gladly answer them

:hap: Now, THERE'S a good plan Lin! :angel1:

Meg, I'm really for sorry for you. Take your bird to the regular vet. He will probably give him a wide spectrum antibiotic and the budgie will probably make it. Like the others said, he can get advice from other vets. Don't wait. Here I am the mom and I always take the birds to the vet. I could not live with my children's sorrow if we lost another one. Good luck Martine.
