Posted February 26, 200619 yr Hi All, Wondering about the situation when a hen has gone of the breeding cycle and her cere loses it's brown colour. Generally how long before it returns to breeding condition? When the cere again starts to slightly brown up how long before it is ready too breed? Tks Alan
February 26, 200619 yr It really varies on the conditions she is exposed to. Temperature, light available, proximity to a male etc. She usually takes 2 weeks after being with a male to start getting into nesting mode. I would not let a hen have any more than 2 clutches a year, or at least 6 months between clutches.
February 26, 200619 yr I agree with Lin. It takes so much out of the pair that you must let them rest. The hen can continue to produce eggs after the first Clutch but let her rest after the 2nd clutch. I would would also recomend some probotics for her and her mate to start the road to recovery.
March 6, 200619 yr Hi , tkanks for the replies. I didn't make myself clear in what I wanted to know the hen never had a clutch last year and I was wondering how long from the time the cere started to turn brown till when the hen would be actually in ready mode? I have been watching her very closely over the last five days and I am amazed at how much browner her cere has become. Tks ALAN :grbud:
March 11, 200619 yr Sorry Alan, The hen may not show a brown cere when coming into season. I look for a hen that is loud and active. Chatting up the males and chewing her perches. If she has a gone through a moult or about finish she is probibly worth a try. The male should be in top condition and also very load.
March 13, 200619 yr Thanks Daz, I will keep those tips in mind. At present I am trying to be patient and just observing and learning from the forum while I am at it. Tks Alan
March 13, 200619 yr You will learn a lot from geting in to a breeders club. I learnt more at PRBS because of the difference in communication. The forum is great but it is not up to the information you get by sitting and discussing the different aspects of breeding from those that Breed for show. You also get the "local" point of view for your area.
March 14, 200619 yr Good point Daz I definitely want to go to your next Pine Rivers meeting.I realise the experience gained from joining a club will be invaluable. Tks Alan
