Posted February 26, 200619 yr Hey guys! I just looked into the nest box, and noticed an egg!!! My pair Chico is 4, Ariel is 2, and they have lived together for about 2 years. They hated eachother, so i baught Kirby to try and seduce Ariel, which didnt work. Chico and KIrby bonded, so i baught Belle who bonded with Ariel ...UNTIL!!!..i left Chico and Ariel together in the bigger cage, and moved Kirby and Belle into smaller cage beside Chico and Ariel, however i put a divider between the cage so they couldnt see eachother...Chico and Ariel BONDED!!!..amazingly, and started to feed eachother, and flirt a lot...(i put them toegtehr with the nest box about 2 weeks ago). Ariel would arch her back, and would allow Chico to mount her, but i never saw him..he would just sing to her, and feed her instead. I have just opened the nest box today, and i saw a egg!!!....Could they have mated while i was gone?. or are hens able to give birth to an egg without mating? Im hoping that this litle egg is fertile, so i will candle it on wednesday!....[probably sonner (Laughing out loud)]...What are your sugestions? Chico has been feeding her, and shes been in nest box a lot incubating egg, so these are good signs right? thx Kirby Edited February 26, 200619 yr by Kirby
February 26, 200619 yr Hens can lay eggs without having a male or mating, and they would be unfertilzed. As to have they mated, you will probably have to candle the egg.
February 26, 200619 yr Author OHHH...i knew it!......thx lovey! I REALLY HOPE HES FERTILE!!!......you guys have no idea!...How long does it take for them to hatch? 18days right?....And does anyone else have an opinion on my case? thx Kirby
February 26, 200619 yr They've probably mated while you've not been around. My budgies seem to mate at ridiculous hours in the morning when i'm asleep, it's unpleasant being woken up by busy budgies!
February 26, 200619 yr as Bea said they like early mornings (just as the sun is comming) so they could have done something with out you knowing. But just having a place the hen thinks as good to nest in then she will start her cycle and start to lay even if the male is too silly to do anything. As to candling it is pointless to candle anytime before 4 days 5th or 6th day is better to tell, becuase before that the egg will look clear and so you think it is infertile. I have my fingers crossed for you.
February 26, 200619 yr Author okay thanks a lot guys! She has been in the nest box all night, and this morning...And Chico has been feeding her a lot. I have never seen him mount still, but is it possible for her to lay eggs without mating, of course theyll be infertile though:(. Another one should b ehere tomrrow, so im anticpating it! And yes, i will candle the eggs 5 days after, so on wednesday i will candle the egg number 1, then so on and so forth.... PRAY FOR ME!!!!... like Nerwen is!...(Laughing out loud) thx again Kirby
February 26, 200619 yr Author (Laughing out loud)...So, im guessing you think the egg is fertile?.... Shes been in nest box ALL day incubating her new baby who *hopefully* hatches!!!....Chico misses playing with her, and is sitting by himself, singing....he looks soo sad, yet soo happy that he might be a father soon!....(Laughing out loud) Anyone else got opinions? thx Kirby

February 26, 200619 yr Author (Laughing out loud)..true Which is why you have to pray for me!!!..hahahahahah thx Kirby
February 27, 200619 yr Author UPDATE: Ariel laid a new egg today!...so theres two now!....The newest egg is a tad bigger than the older one, but Ariel has been incubating them both!, So, yes!, so do think they are fertile becuse i know hens get a special sense on whether or not they are fertile, and if they are infertile, she does not incubate them! So, i think were in business!...HOPEFULLY!..Chico is glowing like a proud poppa!, he has been waiting his whole life to have a perfect little family, and i hope his wish is going to be granted in about 15 days!!....*my wish aswell...HAHAH* Kirby
February 27, 200619 yr My grey opaline Spook laid 6 eggs and I never saw her partner Casper bonk her once !! But so far three have hatched out. Secretive little things
February 28, 200619 yr Yes they are very secretive when they want to be. Another three days and we should get a better picture when you candle.
February 28, 200619 yr Author YA!!!!...your right nerwen!.... I started a poll on justbudgies.com under breeding, and so far, 6 people have voted that 'YES the babies are fertile, and they mated while i was at school!', while NO ONE has voted 'no they will not hatch, and are infertile'..or when i wasnt home..(Laughing out loud)...or in bed..(Laughing out loud), which is right beside the cage..hahah! bye Kirby ps-you mean two days!..(Laughing out loud), the oldest one was born on saterday!....so 5 days is Wednesday which is two days away....and one before my birthday!!!..which is March, 2nd!!!....yayayaya!!!..(Laughing out loud) Edited February 28, 200619 yr by Kirby
February 28, 200619 yr Author (Laughing out loud)..no problem nerwen!... I was curious again!..(shoot me now..hahah) but i candled both eggs, and they both had a yellow thing inside of the shell....which would float to the top of the egg whenever i would move the egg!..SO im guessing thats the embriyo!!!! [or however you spell it...(Laughing out loud)]...YAY!..(Laughing out loud) ps-shes been in nest box past four days!!!!...just to point out again!, and the eggs are always warm when i touch them!...which was only twice..(Laughing out loud) thx guys for all help!..lets just wait to see what i end up gettuig, and how many! ps-what colours could i get again?..from a yellow faced blue type II recessive opaline pied, and a violet white recessive cinnamon pied?...thx! Kirby
March 1, 200619 yr That yellow thing is the yolk, just like you would see if you cracked a hen egg to eat. This is the thing that will feed the young while it is growing. colours: all babies will be recessive pieds, some will be yellowfaces others white faces, all the female babies will be opaline (easy way to sex them :budgiedance:) and you might get some violets (either white or yellowfaces)
March 1, 200619 yr Author wow..i like those colours!!!!.... When you say violets?..do you mean like Ariel is, a violet white recessive pied?..or like plain violet with black markings, and white or yellow faces?...OHH!??!?!..really? so all opalines will be female? How come Chico is a male then?....hes an opaline..I have always wondered that, that people say only females can be opaline, but then i have a male? Is it just more likely to get female opalines than males?...Like in Chicos case? thx again nerwen, i love your comments, (Laughing out loud), becuse i know im not weird by posting breeding questions since people like you actually know this stuff more than others!..(Laughing out loud) Kirby
March 1, 200619 yr :budgiedance: all the babes will be receesive pieds so ones just like ariel are possible. You will not get any normal markings from this pair. In this case all the opalines will be female becuase Chico, the dad, is the only one to have it. It is sex-linked and is carried on the X chromosome, in budies the female has the xy so when a baby is given a x from dad with the opaline gene on it, that mutation shows up on the bird, while the males have two x and need the gene on both to show up. In this clutch the males will be split for opaline. hope that was easy enough to follow.
March 1, 200619 yr Author okay great thx nerwen! OPDATE: Ariel laid her 2rd egg today at around 1pm!!!....and she has been sitting on them all day again! I will candle egg number one tonight, as it has been 5 days now! What should i see in the egg? I saw yellow in it the past couple days, same with the 2nd egg that was born (i saw a yellow thing floated around in it)!!!....My birthday is tomorrow...and im asking for two pet rats!...that i have A L W A Y S wanted!.... (my moms taking me out for dinner, so i think im going to ask then..(Laughing out loud)!...I have always been interested in rats, but i always ended up getting hamsters or gerbils! I held sweet baby rats like 3 years ago, and my mom went into the petstore with me, and she saw how cute they were...but she said fell in love with these 5 wek old hamsters, and said i could get one!..so i did..(Laughing out loud).. Then we went to hold another rat like 4 months ago, and he was crazy and jumped off the table, and hit the floor, and sqeeled like a pig, then bit the lady when she tried to grab him ..so my mom was NOT to thrilled!...So hopefully, when i ask again tomrrow night, and we go over to the petshop, i hold a beautiful, nice, docile one, to show my mom how they can be sweet, and beautiful at the same time!!!..(Laughing out loud))... So now that i have told you my constant rat needs!!!!..(Laughing out loud), do you think i will be allowed? I already have 4 birds plus more on way, a dag, a cat, 4 fish tanks, and hopeuflly two new rats!!!!...My mom loves pets, hence why she supports my hobby, and lets me get all thse things...but she has never liked rats:( Which are my favourite! (she doesnt mind rodents as i have had 9 gerbils at one time, and 4 hamsters over a period of about 8 years!....but i have no rodents currently! ps-i have 3 fish tanks now (2 freshwater, one saltwater, and the 4th is the one im going to setup in the future...which is going to be another saltwater, so im willing to sacrifice ALL the fish tanks, as i plan on selling my cichlids that count as my two freshwater, and my saltwater, as its a lot of work to do for my mom to take care of when i go off to collage or university in about 2.5 years!....where as rats only live like 2.5 years!...so she wouldnt have to take care of them....all thought i know shell love them after like a week...if im even allowed to get them!...(Laughing out loud) (Laughing out loud)..thx again nerwen! She is being good mummy, and sitting on them all so far, whilst Chico sings 16 hours a day!...even louder than before!...so pray for more eggs guys! Buddy
