Too Many Spots?

Can anyone give me information on the cause of the exagerated numbers of spots found on opalines?

Hi Martine,

When the great breeding of the Aussie little budgies occurred then extra special things happened including an excess of Bib spots when I mentioned the trimming of additional feathers in show budgies this is in the Bib that show breeders trim or pluck any excess black spots.. :bluebudgie:

Ahh, yea but this can happen with any type of muation even normals, it's is just something that has happened over time to get the perfect show bird.

nerwen for some reason opalines are renowned for their spots if you want to improve mask and spots it is generally done by using opalines

Thanks, but nobody really knows why they occur right?

i dont think they have exagerated numbers but they are certainly on a whole larger i cant say for why but its just something you get with opalines as well as giving good spots they also tend to suffer from flecking

Arrr now Flecking is a term I read in some information on Show Budgies. What exactly is Flecking?

Dark markings in the feathers on top of the head. i tryed to find a picture but couldnt

I will see if Tootie has some showing in her pictures for you daz. Yes I know bad for showing but I'm not wanting to get into that side of things.

i have a very bad flecked cock bird hes a pied but his other points are good and as long as i pair him to a clear hen he doesnt seem to pass it on but you have to be very carefull

:P Well Marine is clear so his babies might be the same then

Here is a picture not sure if it will show clear enough but it's the best i could find:

nerwen i have seen birds win sections with that amount of flecking ill try and get one of my pied tomorrow

Oh well the things to know, I keep saying I don't know much about showing, but I had hear that flecking is an unwanted thing, I guess I matched that to not winning.

Out of my 5 opalines, only two even have the required number of spots on each side. :P #3 has excellent sized spots, but only on one side, #4 has very small, faint spots, and Blueberry doesn't have any at all. I didn't know opalines usually have excessive spots. I thought it was just normal show budgies that tended to have them.

Well Nerwen, I belong to this french speaking forum and this girl from France showed us a picture of her opaline that had so many throat spots that her cheeks appeared almost black. She was very upset when I told her that it was not considered a desirable trait. Not that I think her bird was not nice looking but I was wondering if we should really insist on breeding bird that have "anomalies" pretty or not after all some people think feather duster are cute? My name is Martine not Marine no big deal :D

No, it was not a show bird but she got it from someone who breeds to show. As far as I am concerned, esthetically speaking, I prefer birds that are close to the originals in shape and form. All those big foreheads and big cheeks don't appeal to me. Of course this is only a personal opinion. There is a proverb in french that says taste and colours should not be discussed. I tend to agree with that. To each is own. :)

yet you told this women it was not desired when it was only your personal opinian

Yes, but doesn't the show standard say three evenly sized spots on each side? So technically wouldn't lots of spots be a fault?

Hath, I really like those grey pieds. :bluebudgie: The grey is such a nice shade.

it does rainbow but thats why you despot them thanks the photos dont do justice really
