Posted February 24, 200619 yr When I got Bobby at Christmas, the pet shop said he was 10 weeks old, so that would make him close to 5 months now. Do budgies start their first moult at 5 months (I think he may be cause their are feathers everywhere!! ) Should I wait until he has moulted before getting his wings clipped, and how long is it usually between moults??? Thanks
February 24, 200619 yr Yes he is moulting, and it depends, Pretty has been going through his moult now for at least 2 months (the weather here is very cold) so his moult has been going slow. As for should his wings be clipped during a molt, a great question that I don't know the exact answer for, so I know someone with more experience will let you know.
February 24, 200619 yr Author Thanks Lovey (I love your user name ) How old is Pretty? - He is a gorgeous bird! Do you know how often they moult???
February 24, 200619 yr Pretty is around 7 months old I read more into clipping on Terri's site, www.budgietalk.com when you go there click on grooming, molts and she also says during a molt is not the best time to clip. This would be because if you clip the wings, and the clipped wings can be replaced with new wings, because you wouldn't know which ones moulted and fell out and which ones didn't.
February 26, 200619 yr Why clip the wings at all? Budgies are natural born flyers, they don´t need to be clipped.
February 26, 200619 yr Author I thought as a once off to help me taming him, as I was having difficulties getting him to bond with me (see my post in budgie behaviours - titled training troubles) I have been following the advise I was given in response to that post and have decided to not have his wings clipped. I would never even consider it if I thought it would permantly stop him from flying as I agree with you, and wing clipping would have been a last resort if I didn't succeed in training him with the other methods.
February 26, 200619 yr Reibe, everyone has their own opinions. Some people are strongly against it but their opinion should not make you feel uncomfortable with your decision or that you did something wrong. While others are in strong favor of it, and again their opinion should not make you feel like you should. Wing clipping does not prevent them permanently from flying unless the wings have been clipped wrong. Taken to a professional that should not occur. Did you read over Terri's site on the facts about wing clipping. Everyone needs to make an individual decision bases on "facts" and what their situation is. Pretty was clipped when I purchased him, and he know has 3 flight feathers coming back in he can fly perfectly with those 3 (Laughing out loud). I would read through the different posts that deal with just wing clipping and read opinions and why people have decided or not decided to do it. Would I have clipped him if he was unclipped, I don't know I would have based it on him and if he would have worked with me on taming. The key to a wing clip if you decide is to get both wings clipped evenly, and have a professional do it first before you attempt it.
