Banding budgies (or parrots in general) is done to trace lineage, identify the breeder, identify the bird is domestically bred and not wild-caught, etc. If you are not going to show your budgies or breed on a regular basis you don't need to band them. You get the bands from your local budgerigar society, and probably have to be a member to get them. Most budgies are banded with a closed ring about 7-10 days after birth. They are used in addition to whatever regular breeding records you keep. Here in the US, banding is not mandatory for small birds like budgies in every state, but larger birds are normally all banded if domestically bred. My budgies are not banded, but I do sometimes see them for sale in pet stores with bands.

Solid rings are placed on the chick (budgerigar) at the age of 6 to 10 days. After that age it is difficult to impossible to "ring" the bird. Should you be thinking of breeding and wish to track the lineage you can get Split rings that clip around the birds leg. The rings come with a tool to put them on.

Note the ring on this chick.

None of my birds are banded.. come to think of it , if I remember correctly, the only one that I've ever had that had one was Fourteen.

:) I can remember about a million years back when my parents had budgies and all of them were banded. Never have I seen one lately, nor do any of mine have bands and I am always looking at budgies in pet stores, etc. Maybe it isn't a definite practise now unless show budgies are involved?

Only one of my purchased budgies is banded. Doesn't seem common practice here.
