Posted February 10, 200619 yr I was given two young budgies that are unclipped and completely scared to death of ppl. with them came gravel or is this grit? do i use it? they also came with seed, but am i giving them the proper source of food? how do I know whats right whats wrong? they are apparently sisters and well they fight like it should i be concerned? how do i know what sex they reallt are? how do i figure out there ages? man so many questions on these little birds. My love bird seems so easy in comparison..(Laughing out loud) :grbud:
February 10, 200619 yr with them came gravel or is this grit? do i use it? ** this is debatable subject, they personally now say that budgies do not need grit because they do shell their seeds, and it can cause impaction in the crop. I personally do not use it. they also came with seed, but am i giving them the proper source of food? Budgies diet should be at least 60-80 % made up of veggies and fruits (mainly veggies), along with 2 tsp of seed a day. Most budgies that have eaten an all seed diet will need to be slowly converted because they won't even touch the veggies or fruits. It could take months to convert but offering it everyday and giving it to them in creative ways will help them. Also there are members that feed part pellet too. how do I know whats right whats wrong? You read, ask questions on the message boards. You can also start reading different informative budgie sites, eterri's is excellent it is www.budgietalk.com. I alway refer back to her site. they are apparently sisters and well they fight like it should i be concerned? ** it depends is it all out fights or just small squabbles, how big is the cage you have them in, it may be too small and they may need more space. how do i know what sex they reallt are? depends on what mutation they are, you can go to in eterri's site for sexing. Blue cere is male, light blue cere with white around the nostrils or tan whiteish cere is female. If you have a pied like mine below it would be different. If you can post a picture that will help :grbud:. What do they look like? how do i figure out there ages? ** most under the age of 4 months have bars down to their cere and as they molt the bars recede and the head becomes white. Again pictures would help. Edited February 10, 200619 yr by lovey

February 10, 200619 yr from their pictures, there ceres do look light blue with whitish around the nostrils, so if my moniter is not playing tricks you do have 2 beautiful ladies. They look at least a year old, the thing with budgies is that they can look a year old when they are 5 so it is hard to tell after they have molted a couple times. I assume they have their iris rings in their eye which would certainly indicate at least 1 yr old.
February 10, 200619 yr bright blue ceres are males, a light cere with whitish nostrils indicate a female out of breeding condition. Not sure about Joey, I would have to look at the picture. I went back and looked at Joey in your other post, he is male you can see his cere is very bright and dark blue, the birds above have light blue ceres .
February 11, 200619 yr wow if these gals are a yr old then they have to be on the really small side...that picture makes them look bigger then what they truley are. how big shou;d they be? what are they mutation wise?
February 11, 200619 yr Pretty birds (and congrats on sorting out the picture stuff, it took me a while as well). My pair that "breed without a nest box" are of very slight build (as are their offspring) and my favourite budgie of all time, Mickey, had a slim physique and people were always wondering if he had enough to eat. He also was an extremely hyper and active bird. Like people, I think they vary a bit. :ygbudgie:
February 11, 200619 yr some budgies are on the slight side, Pretty is small. Post your pictures in the mutations section for exact mutations for them . I am still learning so I will hop over there too. Sidenote, have you ever had them weighed?
February 11, 200619 yr Your blue one looks male to me in that picture, the green it is hard to tell because of the flash. That one maybe a male too. They look normal size to me.
February 11, 200619 yr I'm trying to figure out how old these two are. Now from what i have gathered up to 12 months their are completely dark...correct? and after that there is suppose to be ring...correct? well after peering into their eyes have yet to find any rings, But their markings are as far back as to their eyes...any ideas?
February 11, 200619 yr if they have the iris ring then they could be between 6-12 months, they usually for this mutation will get an iris ring between 8-12 months. Can you get another picture of the 2 two post, because Rainbow is saying (she knows what she is talking about ) male so we can look at the ceres better .
