Posted February 10, 200619 yr Okay, so today I took "Jackson" the father of a clutch of six babies (3 hatched, 3 waiting to hatch), to the vet. The vet said he had scaly face and treated him with ivermectin. Anyway, he said I should take Jackson away fromt the mom and babies. I am worried that she will not be able to care for the entire clutch and I had some questions. 1. What are the chances that mom and the babys will have scaly face? 2. Is there any way I can clean out the cage babys, mom and all to try and prevent them from getting scaly face? 3. How early can I get the babys treated? 4. How contagious is scaly face, I had a cage next to the one with Jackson in it? 5. What are the early signs of scaly face in babys? Any information would be appreciated. Thank you, Wendy
February 10, 200619 yr This is off the top of my head, and I know more people will be on with a more definate answer. I believe scaly face is highly contagious. So, all in contact would have it, and should be treated. But I am unsure at what age you can safely treat babies. Mum should be able to cope with the clutch on her own, but I really don't see any point in removing him. But like I said, none of what I say is based on sure knowledge. Can I ask if it was an avian vet? As for early signs in babies, I would assume it is the same as in adults.

I think he was worried if the babys had it and they could not be treated that they would reinfect Jackson.
February 10, 200619 yr Wait for someone more knowlegeable to come on, or pm Eterri or someone to find out. Touch wood, I have been lucky and not had this in my aviaries for many years
February 10, 200619 yr Here is another question. Has anyone heard of Scatt? Since none of my other birds seem to have any signs yet, should I just treat them all with Scatt and hope the mites get eradicated? How early can I treat the babys with this stuff? thank for all your help Wendy
February 10, 200619 yr On the back of the bottle of medication doesn't it give a warning on if you should or shouldn't use it on younger birds? You can call the manufacture and find out too (at least see what their view is) doesn't mean they may know. I know for flea medicine it says right on the bottles not to use on dogs or kittens under the age of 6 weeks. I really don't know much about this but to offer advice based on what I have experience through other types of pets. Also your vet really should know the answer, especially if he is an avian vet. I will look around do some research on the net and come back and post if I find any articles pertaining to this topic for you .
February 10, 200619 yr Is Scatt for mites too? As far as I know ivermectin is the new drug for this, and the best. I'm sure Lovey will find something for you, and don't forget, you can always ring your vet and ask his advice (if he doesn't allow you to do that I would change vets)

I'm sure Lovey will find something for you, and don't forget, you can always ring your vet and ask his advice (if he doesn't allow you to do that I would change vets) Scatt is as far as have discovered, is invermectin. It is made in Australia by vetafarm but not available to australians to buy unless they purchase overseas. Weird. There is a weight range for the dose of birds of 30g in weight and I doubt that includes babies. I would be concerned about dosing babies even with diluted medication unless advised by a true avian vet. I treated some birds with an identical product a short while ago with an avian vet medication. I was told that the strength of the medication caused the adult birds to feel "woozy" and sleepy....and it did....so....babies ??? NO. Perhaps all these questions should have been asked of the original vet that treated the father of the babies ?
February 10, 200619 yr I could not find anything on treatment of baby budgies, but I did read it can be transferred to them, and scaly face & feet can be affecting a bird without any visible signs. I would say that the mom, would have it that is just me and probably the babies too. And they should be treated. As for Scatt, here is a website I found on it http://www.birds2grow.com/art-scalyface.html and it looks like it is over the counter, because on the bottom you can order it. In fact if you type it into a search engine you will see more information. Note, I am not endorsing it just answering questions and giving the information. I believe wholeheartly when you are working with pets of any sort before you do medicate you should always have the approval of the vet specified for that species. I am not a vet so you need to reconsult with your avian vet for further treatment.

Thanks for everyones advice, I did read the information on Scatt and it said it was good for babies (I don't have it yet, I ordered it off the internet), I just wondered if anyone had ever had any problems or good from it. I decided to put Jackson back in with mom. If mom and the babies have mites, which is a good chance, I am going to take them to the Vet in 4 weeks to treat them too. I will just do another treatment on Jackson then also. That way they will have all been treated at the same time and I can get their cage cleaned out and sanitized for when they get home from the vet. Also, Mama will have some help in getting food for her babies. You should have seen how happy she was when I just reunited her with her hubby! Edited February 10, 200619 yr by WendyzAttic
