General Lighting

Hi,

Have set up new small aviary and a couple of breeding cages and was wondering if someone could enlighten me on the do's and don'ts of general lighting. The area I was going to place them gets some street lighting and keeps the cage in a probably more than half light. Is this too light or should they be in total darkness or is covering them an option? Thanking you for your assistance.

:D Hello And Welcome.

I cant really help with the lighting situation as my aviary has no power to it.. But it use to be located closer to the house and because we leave the laundry light on for the dogs, the birds would be up chirping all night  I cant imagine this would be very good for them.

Maybe you could get some shade cloth and make some blinds for your aviary at night.

Cheers

Una

I would say that is too bright for them, like Una said, some shadecloth would do the trick. My aviary is at the top of my driveway, and a streetlight is at the bottom of the driveway. The birds are in nearly total darkness, although a car with lights on pulling into my driveway will disturb them

Hi Alan good to see another Brissy Bloke. :D

Do you get much light from Gympie Road or is it mostly from the front?

If it is too much and the birds are restless through the night. Shade cloth is good as the girls said.

Enjoy the forum.

Thanks to everyone for the tips. I will give shadecloth a go tonight.

Hi Daz the light comes from two street corner lights on the opposite side of Gympie road. I have had another good look at the problem and with shadecloth and a slight positional change I feel the birds will be fine.

I have spent hours reading info from the forum and really appreciate everyones input and expertise. I am sure I will have plenty of questions in the future to gain some more info learn from all your experiences.

Thanks

ALAN

Let us know how you go. We are glad we can help.

Hi Daz,

The birds seem a lot more settled since covering them with shadecloth.

As a a matter of fact I watched them very closely the last few nights and they were very quiet.

Thanks for the help.

Alan :(

Glad to help. If you want to see some good birds there is a show on at Hendra on the 12th March

Details in the show section.

Tks Daz,

Just checked my shifts and am working on the 12th March, will go to the Ipswich show the week prior, but I did go to the Pine Rivers show and was blown away by the birds there. I think that visit has really hooked me and can't wait to get into the hobby in a bigger way. I have learnt so much in the last two months and I can't thank the participants of the forum enough.

Tks Alan :(

Alan I missed the Pine Rivers Show and that is my club... I here we had over 700 birds on display. Would have been good.

If you are interested in joining a club. Try Pine Rivers. They meet every third monday in th month at the show grounds.

Next meeting is 27th Feb. at 7:30am. Meeting only goes for 1 1/2 hours.

I'll be there. Got to pick up my rings. I am taking Ash for their comments.

Thats Ash in my signature. The grey on the Left.
