I've been buying the gourmet seed for my budgies but I'm wondering if I'm just wasting my money. It seems that they throw most of it on the bottom of the cage. Is regular seed enough if I feed them veggies and fruit.

I've bought both Harts and Hangen premium seed. The premium seed has little bits of fruits and veggies and an tropican egg granules. They smeel delicious - especially the Hagen which has a citrus scent. But the birds seem to throw all of the "gourmet" stuff on the bottom of the cage, and eat the "normal" seed.

i would get normal trill or what ever other kind f plain seed and put fresh fruit and veg in i think you can leave it out

 

its not nescerey i dont think unless they dont get fresh fruits and veg fresh is probly way more new tritous anyway

i think it is a waste to be honest. i tend to avoid mixes with bright coloured bits in as the budgies just picture their favourites. normal seed is perfectly fine if offered with a well balanced varied diet. make sure the mix contains several grains of millet, canary seed and oats.

:ausb: I mix "Budgie Gourmet" in their treat dishes with the pellets, seems to make them eat some pellets which they wouldn't if they were put in there by themselves, the pellets just seem to blend in. :oliveb:

I never liked "Gourmet" much myself.

Nor did my budgies. And I believe it spoils rather quickly. :oliveb:

If this is the same gourmet you're talking about... then yes it's a waste of money in my mind.

A variety of different seeds, oats, and grains is most important. They should get their fresh foods in fresh form. I'm not a fan of dried pieces of veggies and from what I've seen budgies hardly touch them this way to begin with. Ignore the front of the bag, flip it over and read the ingredients. You're going to probably see white proso millet first and then a lot of other things. If it's mostly millet and hardly anything else, go for something different. And avoid any mix that has a lot of sunflower or safflower seeds as these are very fattening. It's hard to find a good mix in stores but check out http://birdsafestore.com In the food section you'll find mixes from Newsong Organics and these are great.

 

Also, Pretty Bird Premium is a fairly good mix and usually easy to find in large chain pet stores.

 

Keep in mind that also feeding pellets will help get a lot more nutrition into your budgie. Far more than seeds alone! They can't pick and choose with pellets. Also keep in mind that even if a seed mix looks good, it's no help unless it's fresh. Try sprouting a few of the seeds. If they sprout, it's a fresh mix. If not, the seeds are dead along with all the nutrition they would have provided for your budgie.

I haven't seen pellets anywhere. I have tried chain stores, independents. etc. . I guess I may have to order online.

i managed to go to my local pet store and they ordered it especialy for me! ask about it and ask to see the magazines they order from that way you can see what you want and show them

Thanks! I will do that. I have been talking with the guy at a local independent, and he has been great. I'm sure he can source some for me.

your avian vet may be able to order them for you at a cheaper price most pellets are 'avian vet recommended' so they only sell online and through vets.
