Posted February 3, 200619 yr My ex father in law swears he once bred a black budgie. Not one to tell tall tales, he used to breed budgies many, many moons ago and says a black budgie fledged from one of his nesting boxes. The only downside is it did not last long and died at a very young age. I am not sure what the parent birds were. But it is an interesting topic. I have searched and some schools of thought are that some grey budgies are so dark that they appear black and others say that black budgies either do exist or are possible. He says his was not a dark dark grey but definitely a black budgie. What do you think ? Edited February 3, 200619 yr by budgiebird
February 3, 200619 yr It is possible to breed a black faced budgie, the topic has come up a few times here before. I'll try to find a photo for you: http://people.zeelandnet.nl/ptsmr/blackface.htm Not sure about an entirely black budgie but it might be possible.
February 3, 200619 yr Oh Wow... Great pictures Bea, thank you for posting that link, I had never before seen a black faced and i think it would be too weird seeing an all black budgie, cute but weird..
February 3, 200619 yr I'm sorry to say that it has never been documented that a Black Budgie has been bred. The first to do it would probibly live very comfortible afterwards. $$$$$$$$$$ The correct term is Melanistic (Blackface) Edited February 3, 200619 yr by daz

PS Budgiebird I forgot to say yes I think your ex father in law did breed something special as I have seen...as below I agree fantastic pictures remember all things are possible..... you can only achieve what your willing to complete.... something Nature has.... some strange modifications.... Black face ---- Black wings in some birds near Mildura. Some back yard breeders out there now have birds called Half siders I ll try a dig out some photos....of these Budgerigars some show 5 different colours... Regards Doc Edited February 9, 200619 yr by Docca

The first to do it would probibly live very comfortible afterwards. $$$$$$$$$$ The point it is hasn't ben documented. But thing over on the site alone how many breed budgies but don't know about genetics, then think of how many are like that out in ALL the world, some one could have a brand new mutation appear in their flock and not know it's value. I would love to have a black face they look so different and interesting. As to the first question yes many believe all black is possible in budgies, as to if your father in law did or not we can't say but I don't think you will ever change his mind about the fact.

Your point is excactly correct. I was going to put that there has never been a black budgie bred but that may not be true. With some so called breeders they may have bred the bird with out knowing it and it may ave liked it's life out or died young. But there never has been a documented photo of one.
February 3, 200619 yr Author In this day and age where most people have computers and / or digital cameras we would both document by photographic proof, search the internet for knowledge and let the budgie breeding fraternity know about the results. The person in questions is a stickler for detail and not known to enlarge upon the truth. Perhaps he did have an accidental breeding of a black budgie......most likely if at all it was a total fluke ! Pity it wasnt born yesterday with our technology, knowledge base, and interests in such things. The possibilities open to us are endless within reason. THEY ONCE SAID THE WORLD WAS FLAT, DID THEY NOT ??
February 3, 200619 yr Well that could be true. I have had my eyes opened on this forum many times. The best one I have to chuckle to is the one where someone has 5 eggs and when the first one hatches they quickly askes what to do. Incubation is 18 days. What have they been doing??? Someone could have bred a black and didn't realise the significe
