Why Is It So Hard To Buy A Good Quality Budgie

Hi Everyone

This isnt directed at breeders in general just my own experiences of late ,im a little frustrated that when visiting a breeder they never want to part with any of their good quality baby budgies ony seem to sell their inferior stock, how is one suppose to ever get a really good quality budgie if no one wants to part with them, i would think you could only keep so many of offspring before you have a population explosion, in your aviary.

at what age can you tell how your baby is going to turn out, i have seen some fine looking specimens with big heads and chests but these are usually adult budgies, i have currently one budgie a english grey budgie but am looking to get him a friend but this time i want to have more choice in the type i get.

im in the fish hobby and keep african cichlids and and selling good quality offspring is a must, i know you cant compare the two hobbies but i would have thought it would be easier to get good quality budgies from breeders.

cheers

I don't know the answer but i also live in melbourne and was wondering what breeders you have gone to and where are they. Hi Sarah anythings possible " sometimes they do it for love others for money "

Join an Avicultural club near you .... get to know them personally and things will change as I said before an old saying " Rome wasnt built in a day"....

Another thing basic birds from a great breeder are great to breed with My tip ask their advice about the birds you purchase and another bit of good advice is save up a pay a little more...

You will not be disappointed.... Regards Doc

sarah do as doccs says and if the club is anything like ours one bird is no problem you will get to know people who will pass on advice and offer you birds but do not be supprised if these are not there best birds take one that is not as good but look at your bird first now and look to see what needs improving buy a bird with this trait and then start your breeding programme

Sarah as for when do you know if your chick is of good quality. Sometimes you don't. You may put it to one side thinking it is only an okay bird. You only find out after the first moult that you have a top quality bird.

thanks very much for your advice guys, now i can see why they hang onto their birds so long before they sell , im going to a show next week in my area so im looking forward to seeing what is all about and there will also be birds for sale , as im mainly looking for a baby i may find nothing , id be quite happy to show but id like a baby as he/she will become part of the family , i havent thought about breeding yet , but i havent ruled it out either

cheers
